Post-harvest antimicrobial that reduces Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli levels1 in poultry-processing plants Overview • AviBrom™ is a broad-spectrum, post-harvest antimicrobial that reduces Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli levels1 at multiple intervention points – Chill tanks, scalders, plant process water and insideoutside bird washers (IOBW) • AviBrom is a proven, effective foundational product for robust poultry-plant total pathogen-control systems1 • Research has demonstrated up to a 2.5-log reduction in post-chill whole-carcass Salmonella and Campylobacter levels1 with AviBrom • AviBrom (1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or DBDMH) is a halogen processing aid that works in a wider range of water pH so the need for acidifiers is reduced or eliminated, reducing costs and the risk of color or shelf-life issues • When used according to label directions* and compared to chlorine, AviBrom: – Is safe for workers, plant equipment and the environment – Is less reactive to organic matter, which provides greater antimicrobial Concrete corrosion activity2 and helps plants comparison4 — maintain robustness of DBDMH and control their total pathogenafter 30 days of aging control strategies – Is more effective in protecting against biofilms, reducing the chance of contamination from hardto-eliminate biofilms3 – Has lower odor, creating a more favorable environment for plant workers – Is less corrosive to plant equipment and floors4,5,6 DBDMH Control • AviBrom is a free-flowing, dry, solid nugget that’s easily loaded into feeders for dissolution with plant water – Dry, dense nuggets mean less material to receive, store and handle – DBDMH has been safely used for many years in poultry-processing plants and because the nuggets are dissolved in a closed system to form hypobromous acid, workers are not exposed to hazardous chemical reactions AviBrom Application System™ • The AviBrom Application System™ meters the diluted AviBrom solution into the plant’s water system so it does not require: – Manual mixing of raw ingredients by plant workers – Mixing or heating of the solution – Performance of an on-site chemical reaction using hazardous materials – Daily monitoring or adjustment beyond testing of the final solution • The AviBrom Application System is owned, installed and serviced by Elanco Food Solutions – Elanco Food Solutions will provide technical support during the site visit and installation, as well as training for plant personnel • The AviBrom Application System configures to existing spray-wash systems in plants with minimal installation, maintenance and space requirements – Easy-to-follow start-up, system-check and shutdown procedures Research Results Study No. 11 • Six (6) reps of 20 birds weighing ~1,950 g • 107 of E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter per mL added to chill tank water • Simulated chill tanks at eight (8) L of water/carcass • Four (4) treatments — 0, 34, 56 and 78 ppm AviBrom (five [5] birds/treatment for six [6] reps) • Carcasses were immersed for 80 minutes at 1°C to 3°C • Carcasses were sampled using “whole-bird” Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) methodology • Chill-tank water sampled after carcasses were removed Table 1.
