12 Hours of APA CEs Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders and Addictive Behaviors A workshop offered at the Annual Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana (RSMj) Fort Collins, Colorado – July 28-29, 2017 This workshop provides participants the opportunity to learn about the latest developments in cognitivebehavioral therapy (CBT) for substance use disorders (SUDs) and addictive behaviors. We focus on five essential components of individual and group CBT: structure, collaboration, case conceptualization, psychoeducation, and techniques. We also present ethics issues that are particularly salient when working with people with addictions. Presenter Bruce S. Liese, PhD, ABPP will lead this workshop. Dr. Liese is Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Courtesy Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Kansas. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Divisions 50 (Addictions) and 29 (Psychotherapy). Dr. Liese serves as President-elect of APA Division 50 (Society of Addiction Psychology). Dr. Liese is a researcher, teacher, clinical supervisor, and clinician. Presently Dr. Liese teaches courses on addictive behaviors, psychotherapy, and evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) and he supervises more than a dozen psychotherapy trainees. In 2015 he received the Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training award from APA Division 50. FULL TRAINING TRACK –The Full Training Track will take place across two days, it will consist of 12 hours of training, and participants will achieve the learning objectives listed below. You must attend all 12 hours to receive credit, since no partial credit will be given (with the exception of the Ethics Training Track described below). Registration for the RSMj conference covers all fees for receiving APA CEs for the Full Training Track. Learning objectives As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Describe 5 essential components of individual and group cognitive-behavioral therapy for substance use disorders. 2. Formulate CBT case conceptualizations for individuals with substance use disorders and addictive behaviors, including distal and proximal antecedents, cognitive, behavioral, and affective processes. 3. Describe methods and challenges associated with goal-setting for people with SUDs and addictive behaviors at differing stages of readiness to change. 4. Demonstrate motivational interviewing skills and explain how they are interwoven into cognitivebehavioral therapy for SUDs and addictive behaviors. 5. Describe and create the structure necessary for individual and group cognitive-behavioral therapy for SUDs and addictive behaviors. 6. Conduct functional analyses for conceptualizing and addressing distal and proximal antecedents, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors associated with substance use and addictive behaviors. 7. Identify cognitive and behavioral techniques appropriate for treating individuals with SUDs and addictive behaviors. 8. Describe, discuss, and address ethical issues that are particularly salient when working with individuals with SUDs and addictive behaviors. ETHICS TRAINING TRACK – The Ethics Training Track will occur on Saturday for 3 hours. You will receive 3 hours of APA CEs. At the conference you will need to pay an additional $50 for registration for the Ethics Training. Learning objectives 1.
