Coaches Corner
Warrior Nation:
Continuing with the theme of commonly asked questions, I’d like do my best to answer one that I have been
hearing lately, “Coach, what is your style of play?” or, “Coach, what can we expect Warrior teams to look like?”
So below is my best attempt at answering this question.
Every great program and coach has been known for something. Knight’s Hoosiers were known for their motion
offense and unbelievable team discipline. Wooden’s UCLA team’s were known for their obsessive attention to
detail. Rupp’s teams were famous for the explosive fast break.
If we want to be successful, we must have a clear vision of exactly what we want our Warrior program to be
known for. My vision is quite simple… Tough, smart, and skilled players. While not exactly profound, it provides
clarity in our preparation. We know if we develop players that fit this mold, we will be successful.
Toughness: We want to be known for tough, ultra competitive players who thrive in pressure, welcome adversity,
compete with grit, and maintain their composure in the toughest of circumstances. We will have physically tough
players who sacrifice their bodies for the team, play with physicality, and compete with an edge. Our players will
be uncommon— they will understand human weakness, but they will also understand they don’t have to
succumb to it. Our teams will hope for adverse circumstances, as they know this is an opportunity to “show off”
our toughness. We will achieve this collective vision by embedding toughness into everything we do. Not only will
we train our players physically, but we will also devote a great deal of time to training our players mentally. The
goal of our practices are to make them more difficult than any game.
Intelligence: Our players will win the battle between the ears. We will ask our players to think the game, study
the game, and understand the game at a championship level. In fact, we will ask as much of our players
intellectually as we will physically. One of the main ways we will accomplish this is through intense film study.
The film room will be our classroom, soaking up the knowledge that it takes to gain a competitive edge.
Moreover, several of our drills in practice will be designed to get our players to solve problems and think critically.
Skill: While basketball is an athletic man’s game, it’s also a skilled man’s game. We will use the 7 tool model— A
7 tool player can dribble, pass, and shoot with speed, quickness, toughness, and savvy. Our mission is for each
player to develop as many of these tools as possible. We will accomplish this by being more productive and
getting more repetitions on skill development than any other program in the state of Indiana. Our coaches at all
levels will teach the details of each skill and provide correction as necessary.
My belief, is if you have tough, smart, and skilled players, then you can adjust your system to maximize the
strengths of each particular team. As a high school coach, we don’t have the luxury of recruiting players to fit our
system. Therefore, it is our responsibility to have a system that is flexible enough to adjust to each team’s
strengths.

YOUTH TRAINING CAMP
Our First ever Scottsburg Basketball Youth Training Camp
successfully concluded. The kids were excellent in the
process. Nothing better than seeing young kids that are
hungry and excited to compete and excel in a gym, especially
Meyer Gym. Rosters have been posted on
scottsburgwarriors.com. While these rosters represent the
teams for for this Winter basketball season. These rosters are
not permanent and we encourage all kids to not take their
current position for granted and continue to work on their
game. Our youth program promotes development for all kids
at all levels. Something we preach with our varsity group is to
excel in your role but
never get compliance
with short term
success but focus on
long term goals as
well. “When one of us

Head Junior Varsity Coach. Richardson is a 1993 Scottsburg High
School graduate and a three year starter with Scottsburg Warriors.
He helped his teams win back-to-back Sectional Championships in
1992 and 1993 while also winning the Mid-Southern Conference
Championship in the 1991-92 season. Richardson is a 1997
graduate of Milligan College, in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was
a four year starter for the Milligan College Men’s Basketball Team.
He helped his team win consecutive regular season conference
championships in 1994 and 1995. The 1995 team was also the
first team in Milligan’s history to represent the Buffaloes in the NAIA
National Tournament. Richardson served as team captain in the
1996-97 season. He also currently holds the school record for
most 3-point makes in game with 10. Over the last four years
(2012-2016) Richardson has served as Assistant Men’s Basketball
Coach at Hanover College. Prior to his stint at Hanover College,
Richardson was a NCAA Division I assistant coach at GardnerWebb University (Boiling Springs, NC) 1997-2000 and 2002-03 and
Elon University (Elon, NC) 2000-2002. He made his mark in

While at Gardner-Webb University he helped guide the 1999-2000
team to a 25-5 record and a trip to the NCAA Division II National
Tournament while winning the South Atlantic Conference regular
season championship. He and his wife, Kristen Richardson reside
in Scottsburg with their
children Caden and Ellie.
Jacob Matthew Dunn was born on November 21, 1989 in

Throughout his college managing career, he was able to
travel to places like Hawaii, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado,
Iowa and many more because of basketball. He has worked
under some of the best coaches in the college game. During
his time at Indiana State, they played in the NIT two years
in a row.
A 2014 graduate from Indiana State, Coach Dunn boasts a
degree in Physical Education with a Sports Management

that there is nothing better than being a Scottsburg Warrior. While finishing up his degree at Hanover College, Christian plans
to major in Education and pursue a future in Teaching and Coaching High School Basketball. While on staff Christian will be
helping as a Varsity Assistant and the C-Team Head Coach. Go Warriors!
