Splitting Strategy 48 x 6 1. Split 48 into Friendly numbers 2. Multiply 40 x 6 and 8x6 3. Add 240 + 48 to find the answer. 48 x 6 40 8 6 240 48 =288 ! Box Strategy 48 x 6 1. Draw a 2 column box. 2. Break 48 into Friendly Numbers and write 40 over one column and 8 over the other. Write 6 to the left of the box. 6 3. Multiply 6 x 40 and 6x8 6 240 48 4. Add 240 + 48 40 8 40 8 240+48 = 288 ! Repetitive Addition 48 x 6 4 48 48 48 48 + 48 288 Option 1 - Add 48 together 6 times. 48 + 48 96 + 48 144 + 48 Option 2 - Add 48 +48. Add 48 to the total. Continue 192 totalling and adding + 48 240 48 until you have + 48 added 48 6 times. 288 ! Japanese Lines 48 x 6 1. Draw 4 lines slanted up to the right. Leave a space and then draw 8 more lines underneath. 2. Draw 6 more lines, slanting down over top of the lines you have already drawn. Make sure to cross all of the lines. 3. Count the number of times the blue and green lines cross. These lines represent numbers in the tens column. 4. Count the number of times the orange and green lines cross. These lines represent numbers in the ones column. 5. Add the tens and ones together. blue+green = 24 tens orange+green = 48 ones 24 tens + 48 ones = 288 ! Grouping Strategy 48 x 6 1. Draw 6 groups 2. Place 48 tally marks in each group. 3. Count up the tally marks to find the answer. = 288 ! Array 48 x 6 Method 1 - Draw a large rectangle with 48 columns and 6 rows. Count the number of boxes to find the answer. = 288 Method 2 - Draw 48 rows of 6 dots each. Count the number of dots to find the answer. = 288 ! Box Strategy 48 x 16 40 1. Draw a box with 4 sections. 2. Break 48 and 16 into Friendly numbers. Write them above and beside the boxes. 3. Multiply a number from the top of the box by a number from the left of the box, writing the number in the corresponding cell. 4. Add all the numbers together. 8 10 6 40 8 10 400 80 6 240 48 400 240 80 + 48 768 ! Japanese Lines 48 x 16 1. Draw 4 lines slanted up to the right. Leave a space and then draw 8 more lines underneath. 2. Draw a line that slants the other direction overtop of lines you already drew. Leave a space and draw 6 more lines. 3. Count the number of times each group of lines crosses. The Red and Blue lines represent the hundreds column, Green and Blue plus Red and Orange are the tens column, and Orange and Green are the ones column. 4. Add the ones, tens and hundreds together. 32 4 48 8 48 ones 32 tens 8 tens + 4 hundreds 768 ! Standard Algorithm 48 x 6 1. Write 48 and 6 vertically, lining up the place value columns with the 6 underneath the 8. 2. Multiply 6x8. Record the 8 underneath the 6 and carry the 4. 3. Multiply 6 x 4, then add the 4 that was carried over. 48 6 4 48 6 8 4 48 6 288 ! Lattice Method 48 x 16 4 1. Arrange 48 and 16 around a 2x2 grid, then draw diagonal lines through the squares. 1 2. Fill each square with the product from above the square and to the right. The tens column of the product goes in the upper half of the square. If there is no tens digit, record a 0. 3. Starting from the lower right, add the numbers along the diagonals. If you get a 2 digit answer, carry the tens column into the row above. 4, To find the answer, read the digits starting down the left of the grid and continuing across the bottom. 8 6 4 0 2 4 4 8 0 4 0 7 2 1 6 1 8 6 4 0 8 8 4 4 0 8 1 8 6 4 8 ! Splitting Strategy 48 x 16 1. Split 48 and into Friendly numbers 2. Multiply 40 x 6 and 40x10. Then multiply 8 x 10 and 8 x6. 48 x 16 40 8 10 6 400 48 80 240 3. Add 400+240+80+48 =768 ! Standard Algorithm 48 x 16 1. Multiply 6x8. Record the 8 underneath the 6 and carry the 4. 4 48 16 28 8 4 2. Multiply 6 x 4, then add the 4 that was carried over. 3. Place a 0 in the ones column under the 8. 4. Multiply 1x8 and record it beside the 0 in the tens column. Next multiply 1 x 4. 5. Add 288 +480 4 48 16 288 0 48 16 288 480 4 48 16 288 480 768 !
