ADVANCED
BI FUELS
17-19 MAY 2017, GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN
WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL
ADVANCED BIOFUELS CONFERENCE
– FOR AVIATION, MARITIME AND LAND TRANSPORT!
CONFERENCE CENTRE WALLENBERG, GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN
FINAL PROGRAMME INSIDE
Organised by:
WELCOME TO THE ADVANCED BIOFUELS
CONFERENCE IN GOTHENBURG!
Biofuels are an ever important piece in the transition to a fossil fuel-free world. Advanced
biofuels, being sustainable and regardless of resources or technology, grown in forests or on
agricultural land are vital in keeping global warming below 2°C as agreed. The transport sectors
in aviation, maritime and on land benefit from biofuels bringing growth to a bioeconomy, adding
security to supply, energy and cost.
While the market is ready, fossil fuel prices are at low levels and there are different political ambitions on both national and European levels. What long-term policy and instruments will the European Union adopt to reduce CO2 emissions? How can the industry create business opportunities
for this emerging market, taking advantage of technological innovations?
Biofuels have the potential to unlock the downward trend in increasing carbon emissions from the
transport sector, replacing fossil carbon with renewable carbon. The technology is there and the
biofuels industry is ready to make investments. Now is the time to pave the way for direct measures,
fulfilling ambitious goals for biofuels to an exit for fossil fuels!
We would like to thank our great sponsors and partners for supporting us in organizing this conference.
We have three exciting days in Gothenburg and we welcome all of you delegates taking part,
sharing information, exploring your business opportunities and developing this industry further!

THE BLUE TOUR:
STOP 1. PREEM REFINERY
Preem is Sweden’s largest fuel company. Preem’s two refineries in Gothenburg and
Lysekil are among the most modern and environmentally adapted in Europe. Preem is
an important player in the conversion to renewable fuels. Preem’s vision is to lead the
transition towards a sustainable society. Therefore, the company produces renewable
fuels (HVO), diesel and gasoline that work in today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles.
STOP 2. VOLVO TRUCKS AND EXPERIENCE CENTER
Volvo Trucks is the second largest heavy-duty truck manufacturer in the world. This
tour includes a visit to an exhibition and a presentation. A guided tour in the exhibition
will describe the company’s history, trucks and services and how the company innovates
to create value to customers and society. There will also be a presentation by Lars
Mårtensson, Director Environment and Innovation, about Volvo Truck’s view on future
transports with special focus on fuels.
STOP 3. SÖDRA CELL VÄRÖ
Södra is Sweden’s largest forest-owner association, with more than 50 000 forest
owners as members. We will visit Södra’s plant at Värö, Sweden’s most modern pulp
mill and largest saw mill. Together they form a true biorefinery, producing pulp, wood
products, pellets and other fuels, tall oil, biopower and heat for district heating. The
different units at the site cooperate for high energy efficiency.
Please note that registration is mandatory and the
study tours are open for conference delegates only!
THE GREEN TOUR:
STOP 1. GOBIGAS
GoBiGas is the world’s largest project to demonstrate gasification of woody biomass
to biomethane. Göteborg Energi, in cooperation with Chalmers University of Technology, continues its work to improve the plant’s efficiency and develop a cost-effective
process in order to be competitive even with low oil prices and inadequate policies in
place. You will listen to a presentation about the facility, the technology, research and
the challenges. We will also make an outside tour of the plant.
STOP 2. St1 REFINERY
St1 Refinery in Gothenburg is a modern refinery annually processing 4 million tonnes of crude oil from the North Sea. St1 has one of the most energy efficient refineries in the world. St1 is a pioneer in advanced biofuels, producing ethanol from
different waste materials. Today St1 is commissioning Cellunolix® plant – the world’s
first commercial demonstration plant producing cellulosic ethanol from saw dust.
STOP 3. PERSTORP BIOPRODUCTS REFINERY
At the visit to Perstorp’s site in Stenungsund you will see Scandinavia’s most modern
plant for biodiesel and biodiesel post treatment. You will also see how biogas is incorporated in large scale gasification and downstream chemicals production, with focus
on the plants for heavy alcohols and their exciting development to become the pilots
for the next major biobased diesel replacement molecules.
THE ORANGE TOUR:
STOP 1. RENEWABLE MARINE FUEL
ScandiNAOS AB in Sweden is developing fossil free propulsion for vessels
since 2009, when we started evaluating methanol as a fuel for marine engines.
Today m/s Stena Germanica is provided with methanol for their main engines
totaling 24 MW. As a ship design company we have participated in the fuel
storage, bunkering and safety design.
Since two years back we are heading two fossil free ship projects, Summeth
and Green Pilot. Summeth (Sustainable Marine Methanol) aims for market and
safety/risk analysis, vessel system design and engine laboratory tests of methanol engines.
Green Pilot is a straight hands-on project where the Swedish Maritime Administration has provided a two engine pilot vessel to be converted to be operable
on methanol. ScandiNAOS has access to a Scania 13 liter diesel engine of 405
kW and a Fitech W12 engine of 320 kW. Both engines have now been converted to run on methanol/ethanol and been load tested. The Fitech engine is now
installed in the pilot vessel to be test run during the summertime.
We would like to demonstrate that fossil free alcohols are efficient and environmental friendly fuels to meet the future requirements of climate neutral transports. Therefore, ScandiNAOS invites you to Klippan, Göteborg, for a demonstration on board our converted pilot vessel.
Please note that registration is mandatory and the
study tours are open for conference delegates only!
Please note that this study visit will be back at Scandic Rubinen at appr. 12.00.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE SESSIONS – WHAT TO EXPECT!
Within Advanced Biofuels Conference 2017 you will be able to participate in several sessions focusing on
different themes. Depending on your own interest and profile you can choose among them, the mini expo
with exhibitors and the pre-conference study tours.
POLITICAL STRATEGIES & VISIONS

a fossil fuel-free world?
MYTH-BUSTERS ON RENEWABLE FUELS!
Today, the debate run high on biofuels, their impacts
and sustainability and both biofuels on the market and
biofuels under development are under scrutiny. This
session will provide (scientifically based) perspectives
on the development, production and use of environmentally, economically and socially sustainable renewable
transport fuels, as part of a future sustainable society.
The researchers all address common myths in the public
debate on biofuels and show, using a systems approach,
how scientifically based knowledge can provide guidance to policy makers, government, industry and other
organizations. Thus, the session will provide food for
thought as well as a guide to managing the myth minefield — and the roaring trade in (dis)information about
biofuels, feedstocks, and social impact.

the latest technology, gadgets and future trends from the developers!
FUEL-FLEXIBLE SAAB 9-5 CAR
This fuel-flexible Saab 9-5 car is originally designed for E85, a mixture of
gasoline and ethanol. This has been complemented with methanol. There
are about 230 000 E85 cars in Sweden which are suitable for this Gasoline
Ethanol Methanol mixture (GEM). Only a small service operation is needed to
replace some plastic parts that are in contact with the fuel.
The methanol used in this car is produced by waste products from the Swedish
forest. In customized engines the methanol efficiency may even be higher
than in a diesel engine.
