2011-12 OTTERBEIN MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW
With four starters returning, the Otterbein University men’s
basketball team will be looking to take the next step and grab a
top spot in the conference in 2011-12. Head coach Dick Reynolds, preparing for his 40th-season, is bringing the Cardinals off
a 13-13 campaign in 2010.
The Cards were picked to finish third in the Ohio Athletic
Conference preseason coaches poll, coming in behind Marietta
and John Carroll.
“It makes our guys know that their talent is respected,” said
Reynolds of the team’s preseason selection. “It’s now their job
to do something with that talent, but it’s nice that the conference recognizes the ability we have.”
Leading the way will be senior center Chris Davis. Davis was
named a preseason All-American by The Sporting News after
earning first team All-OAC last year while leading the league
in scoring (18.6 ppg.) and rebounding (11.0 rpg.). Also an alldistrict and all-region selection, Davis tallied 18 double-doubles
in 26 games, earning OAC Player of the Week three times and
finishing among the top-20 nationally in rebounding.
Junior forward Zach Bakenhaster enjoyed a breakout season
in 2010, compiling averages of eight points and six rebounds
per game. He also led the team with 27 blocked shots, serving
as a nice compliment to Davis down low.
“They are able to give us one look down low, and then our
smaller lineup can give us another look,” said Reynolds of the
team’s balance. “Chris and Bake work well together, and also
combine nicely with Max (Van Meter) and Steve Isaac. So I think
we’ve got a couple different looks we can use.”
Senior Brice Rausch returns to help lead the backcourt after
averaging 13.5 ppg. and earning All-OAC honorable mention as
a junior. He shot 43% from the field last winter while scoring 15
or more points in nine contests.
Rounding out the returning starters will be sophomore
Max Van Meter, while classmate C.J. Julian, who started 14 of
25 contests last season, also returns. The two combined for 49
steals and nearly 18 points per game last season as freshmen,
and will be looking to elevate their play in their second season
of college ball.
Senior point guard Mark Louks is back for one final campaign,
as is fellow senior Steve Isaac. Both have seen minutes in key
games throughout the past three seasons.
The squad is also excited to receive contributions from a
variety of newcomers, most notably Walsh University transfer
Jason Davis and freshman guards RaNeal Ewing and Andy Yazrombek.
“We’re more experienced and talented, and look better on
paper all the way around than we have been for awhile,” Reynolds
said. “Then you add in the newcomers who give us some added
quickness and variety on the perimeter, and it makes everything
exciting to look forward to.”

HEAD COACH DICK REYNOLDS
8
Head Coach Dick Reynolds has established himself as one of
the most successful coaches in the 109-year history of the Ohio
Athletic Conference (OAC).
The 68-year-old Reynolds,
who also serves as the director
of athletics at Otterbein, was
inducted into the Ohio Basketball
Hall of Fame and the Otterbein
College Athletic Hall of Fame in
2009.
Coach Reynolds reached
the pinnacle of his career during
the 2001-02 season, guiding the
Cardinals to their first national
championship. Otterbein finished
at 30-3, winning the OAC regularseason title and post-season tournament — that after being
picked to finish sixth in the conference in a preseason coaches’
poll.
In 2002, Reynolds was selected NCAA Division III Coach of
the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches; and
for the second time in his career, Ohio College Coach of the Year
by his Ohio coaching peers in balloting conducted by the Columbus Dispatch. He also earned this honor in 1981.
After 39 seasons, he ranks first among OAC skippers on the
all-time career victory list with 644. Nationally, Reynolds sits
fourth for victories among active coaches and sits sixth all-time in
NCAA Division III. Among all NCAA divisions, Reynolds holds down
the 39th spot, just 30 wins away from legendary UCLA coach John
Wooden.
Reynolds notched career win 600 on Dec. 09, 2006, a 95-84
win over Muskingum at home. Only nine other coaches have
reached that mark in NCAA Division III.
A nine-time OAC Coach of the Year selection, Reynolds became the first coach in the OAC to take teams to conference titles
over four different decades. He has taken his cagers to at least a
share of the regular-season conference title 11 times, earning it
outright in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 2002; and sharing it
in 1973, 1976, 1981, 1985 and 2000. The 1978, 1986, 1989, 1991,
1992, 1993, 1994 and 2002 teams won the conference’s postseason tournament.
His overall record stands at 644-409 — for an average of 16.5
wins a season — en route to constructing a program which has
often placed Otterbein in the national spotlight.
The Cardinals have advanced into the NCAA Division III Tournament 13 times under Reynolds’ tutelage, winning the national
championship in 2002 and reaching the Final Four in 1981 and
1991.
Other NCAA Tournament finishes include: the regionals in
1978, the regionals in 1985, the quarterfinals in 1986, the regionals in 1987, the quarterfinals in 1989, the first round in 1990, the
sectional finals in 1992, the second round in 1993, the first round
in 1994 and the second round in 1999.
Despite difficult scheduling and the pressures of maintaining
a top-flight program, Reynolds’ coaching philosophy has consistently produced outstanding results.
“The key is to get everything we can out of every individual on the team,” Reynolds says. “Every player is a contributor throughout the entire year. It pays to encourage total team
involvement.”
Reynolds has a simple formula for his success.
OTTERBEIN
“What I like to be able to do is put a team on the floor that
is well disciplined, well groomed, plays together and plays hard,”
he says. “If you have those qualities, combined with talent, you’re
going to win.
“If you’re not well groomed, you’re not disciplined,” Reynolds
continues. “If you’re not disciplined, you won’t play together. And
if you don’t play together, you usually don’t play hard.”
Despite his success — 19 seasons with 18 or more victories
— Reynolds remains content with his current coaching duties.
“Coaching to me is not necessarily wins and losses,” Reynolds says. “Yes, you like the wins, but I’ve stayed at Otterbein
because I like the situation. I like the people. I like what I’m doing
here.”
Following graduation from Otterbein in 1965, where he was
a 12-time letterman in football, basketball and track, Reynolds
returned to his home town of London, Ohio, and taught seventhgrade science while serving as an assistant coach in football,
basketball and track at the high school. He was inducted into the
London Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
Reynolds served three years in the U.S. Air Force (1966-69)
as a personnel services officer in charge of recreation. His service
teams compiled a 38-10 record.
He spent three seasons as assistant under Otterbein head
coach Curt Tong, guiding the junior varsity squad to a 31-20 mark
before taking over as head coach in 1972.
Reynolds and his wife, Ellen, live in Westerville. They have
two children, Amanda and Chad, and five grandchildren.

ABOUT OTTERBEIN
Ballenger, a 1939 graduate of Otterbein.
Over the last four years, Otterbein has added the Clements
Recreational and Fitness Center, a new softball field, and new
tennis courts; and an upgrade of the baseball field.
“With the addition of the new stadium, we have one of
the best athletics complexes in the conference,” said Bob Gatti,
Otterbein Vice President for Student Affairs.

Additional sports facilities at Otterbein include tennis courts,
and separate fields for softball, baseball and soccer. A 2.5-mile
cross country course, which meanders Alum Creek and traverses
woods and farmland, opened in the fall of 1995.
Gifts from the Otterbein alumni and friends have helped
provide educational opportunities through athletics for sportsminded students. Former student-athletes have continued their
success in coaching, teaching, recreational and professional
fields-evidence of quality educational experiences offered at
Otterbein University.
HISTORY
Built in 1974, the Rike Center houses physical education
facilities and offices. The domed roof encloses an intercollegiate
hardwood basketball floor with seating for 3,100; equipped
weight training room; two handball courts; and locker rooms
for varsity teams and physical education classes. Conventional
classrooms and offices are located on the perimeter.
A $300,000 gift from the Rike family of Dayton inaugurated
the capital campaign to finance construction of the Rike Center,
which was built for about $1.5 million.
In the spring of 2008, an $84,000 weight room was installed
in the Rike Center, providing new flooring, free weights and
equipment for use by student-athletes, students and staff. The
project was spearheaded by the “O” Club with support from
GAME INFORMATION
The Frank and Vida Clements Recreation and Fitness Center
opened in the fall of 2002.
The $9.5 million center enhances the curriculum and clinical
experiences for students preparing for careers in health, fitness
and athletic training.
In addition, the center significantly increases the facilities for
the athletic training, sport management, and health and fitness
programs; increases the health, wellness and recreation programs
for students, faculty and staff; enhances Otterbein’s capacity to
attract future students; and expands the opportunities for partnership with the wider Columbus community.
The center has two components: a 75,000 square-foot field
house, complete with a sanctioned six-lane, 200-meter indoor
track; and a two-story connector to the existing Rike Center,
which features a high-tech cardiovascular fitness area, fullyequipped training and rehabilitation center, coaching offices,
classrooms and a student lounge area.
2011-12 CARDINALS
A new era in Otterbein football began in the fall of 2005 as
the Cardinals moved into a new home in Memorial Stadium.
“This completes the multi-year upgrade of our sports and
recreational facilities,” said then-Otterbein President Brent DeVore.
The new $3.2 million grandstand, built on the same site of
old Memorial Stadium, was dedicated on Sept. 17, 2006 shortly before Otterbein defeated cross-town rival Capital, 17-14, by
scoring twice on its last two possessions of the game.
The new grandstand was financed through private funds,
raised through the Clements Foundation and the Otterbein
“O” Club, both long-time contributors to athletics and other
academic programs at Otterbein.
The new grandstand, with handicap access, seats 2,400,
including a section in the middle with 500 stadium chairs, and
a press box with elevator. The stadium also features state-ofthe-art locker rooms, a training room, equipment room, and
“O” Club room.
Other recent improvements to Memorial Stadium include a
new lighting system, courtesy of Cellular One, in 1996, and renovation of the outdoor track and field facilities in 1988 through
a donation from the late Dorothy McVay, from Westerville. In
1989, the gridiron was named in honor of Dwight “Smokey”
