Edition #4 2015 WRAP UP "These pink socks are really comfortable. Can we wear them every week?” – The entire men’s 4s THE WHISPER Did an LTUHC umpire fail their accreditation test over the weekend because the standard of hockey in the game they were umpiring was considered too poor? Has the contest for this year’s GG already lead to opposition teams being paid to take out the leader board? Is everything coming up Millhouse for the Men’s 5s? Are other teams beginning to question how they continue to face the same group of blokes in the Handsome Men’s 6s (formerly the Handsome Men’s 5s) after the fellas have notched back-to-back premierships? IN A PARAGRAPH And then there were … still three. A trio of the club’s teams have continued their unbeaten streak for the fourth consecutive round, with the men’s 4s and 6s, plus the women’s 4s, vying to become the first team to purchase commemorative premiership t-shirts. In further good news, the Handsome Men’s 6s handed down yet another beating to Knox. And two further LTUHC teams have aspirations to join them next week. Sadly the club’s campaign to F*** MUHC over the weekend didn’t quite go to plan. All of our Vic League squads left the field without a win, but with plenty of lessons learned and hopes to revive the campaign later in the season. Oh, and if you haven’t worked it out – this week’s Wrap Up has a pink theme in honour of Women’s Round. Which was a huge success. There’s more on that later in the Wrap Up. We started off fairly strong sticking to the plan of man on man. By half time the scores were 0-0. If only the game had ended then. The second half didn’t start off as planned, Melbourne Uni scored a goal early off a lucky deflection. Not long after another was scored. We kept fighting but an unlucky foot near the goal line resulted in a stroke. The final score was 4-0, which wasn’t a true indication of our efforts. On a more positive note it was women’s round! It was good to see so many people down at the club showing their support. Bags and Rachael did an amazing job setting up the decorations, organising pink socks, the cake stall, pamper station and many other things behind the scenes. WOMEN's 2s Another freezing late evening game, saw the Gunners come up against MUHC. In the blistering cold we battled hard against these girls that just felt like an invisible wall, we just could not seem to get past the half way line. Their skill set seemed to infringe on us, at times it felt like a game of soccer, and it felt like we defended 60 short corners in a row at one stage. Bel as goalie had some awesome saves, whilst Brax and Farky swept oceans of balls away in the shorts. Eventually, and to our annoyance, they put one past us. 1-0. We weren't disheartened and pushed ourselves harder, trying to fight back. Liz had some awesome tackles in the wings, whilst newbie Jass tore up some awesome attacking play. All the girls worked their little butts off, but it just wasn't enough to get a goal back in time! A huge thanks to Percy and Birdy for doubling up! WOMEN's 3s What a great start to the game. Our umpire was a no show. Lucky Shelly’s mum was there to fill in! The game began slowly and that set the pace for the rest of the game. Although we were quieter on the field than normal, we were able to take advantage of some great positioning and move the ball effectively into the forward line. Unfortunately by half time the opposition had scored two goals, leaving us a little deflated. After a much needed break we gathered as a team and came back fighting in the second half. We put what we have learned at training into practice and manned up, tightening our defence and shutting down a lot of the oppositions attacking play. We even managed to get a few short corners, but sadly we were unable to convert. Claire did however take out one of the opposition’s players with a strong hit from the top of the circle. Amongst all our efforts MCC was able to score another goal, winning 3-0. Even though we have only played a few games together we are working well as a team and will only get stronger as the season progresses. Here’s hoping we smash Knox on their home turf next weekend and score our first win. WOMEN's 4s Playing in pink socks on Mother’s Day no less, the Ladies of La Trobe were expecting a solid hit-out against second place Camberwell and we weren’t disappointed. Whilst we dominated the play and were in attack for most of the game, we struggled to convert our opportunities. The Camberwell Goalie made some great saves and many of our shots went wide. We eventually found the backboard, twice, in the second half. Katy Glide was very careful not to cherry-pick off yours truly lest she be forced to write this wrap-up. Solid play from Billie and Ainslee as well as Heather, Paula and Fluff across the middle kept the ball in our attacking half and limited our need to defend too deeply. Injuries, hangovers and colds as well as the miserable weather probably didn’t help us to find our hockey mojo this week but as they say, a win is a win is a win. Unfortunately our goal sneak, Sarah Dowling left the field towards the end of the first half with a serious hand injury. There are rumours that other GG contenders conspired with Camberwell to take her out of the running. They will be disheartened to learn that Sarah has announced she’ll be back next week after contacting Steven Dank who has agreed to personally “assist” her recovery. Our September aspirations remain alive! WOMEN's 5s The 5s were the final women's game for Women's Round. We dedicated this week's game to Tee's mum who passed away two years ago. What a game! And what a turn out. We had four subs, which was great and ensured everyone could get the break they needed! MCC started off dirty and kept it up throughout the game. They sure liked to use their elbows! We started off hard and played the best we could right through to the end, regardless of the many goals MCC scored (most by the sneaky #90). In the end, we came out still happy with our performance and look forward to winning against Croydon next week! MEN's 1s We entered the game short on numbers, and if it wasn’t for the help of Diff and Dev doubling up, we’d have struggled to field a team this week. MUHC came out firing and scored two early goals, and then continued to pressure us well, making it 4-0 at half time. We knew our structure wasn’t holding up well, and after some quick structural changes at the break, we came out to score the next goal. Unfortunately, MUHC scored quickly and the game ran away from us. In previous years there’s been a lot of enjoyment playing Brunswick and many a small blaze extinguished. Let’s hope this week is no different! MEN's 2s Old rivals Melb Uni. What can I say, they all got better ATARs than us. They all got 99.95 to do an Arts Degree. We got fired up by Greg’s inappropriate jokes and then we were quoting team legend Hamish McArthur “I f******* hate these c***s and let’s f*** them up”. MUHC had an experienced team whilst we had 12 players and a pussy captain with sore ribs. We actually wish his goal scoring wife played instead. We struggled on their slow carpet like ground and they went forward many times. They scored two, but we replied to that pretty quickly. Our overlapping was excellent but MUHC kept coming at us. We played better in the second half, but this wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard. Lewis ‘the part time hockey player, one time pole vaulter, full time stud (find him on tinder)’ got injured. Again. We were down to one on the bench with a few players carrying injuries and sickness and we got overrun in the end. MUHC were good at hockey but a small minority of their players still struggle in aspects of life, such as being c***heads. Highlights of the game included a solid effort at half time for lolly duties, the Melb Uni v Wesley College footy game next door, Kieren Baker playing his best game for the club so far, Kieren’s hair was outstanding and the post-game Coopers and Pizza/Nacho/BBQ Shapes were great (even better that they were on sale and cheaper than draught). Diff and Dev doubled up meaning they didn’t get near the team esky! Thanks to the 1s for their support and John’s girlfriend, Rob Scoberg and Adam Murphy for supporting us. Next game we will win! (Hopefully) Oh yeah, can’t forget the modelling shoot during our game (pictured right) lol #shaqattack MEN's 3s The blokes turned up enthusiastic and relaxed (maybe a little too relaxed?) knowing the game wasn’t going to be an easy one. Spirits were high from the beginning with everyone doing their bit and dominating the opposition. However after the first 10 minutes our game seemed to drop off and we found ourselves out of position, scrambling for possession and control. But we pulled our heads together and managed to score the first goal of the game. At the start of the second half we were still a little scattered. However, after Werribee scored and equalised the match, everyone seemed to lift and we regained control of the match. It all came down to an attacking short corner after the final siren to win the game. After three consecutive attempts we just couldn’t quite put the ball in the net. Overall the team played well with many shots on goal and a number of short corners. MEN's 4s As the team donned the pink socks, many of the lads were very happy with their attire and asked whether we could wear these again in future. It's all to do with the 'feel' and the 'warmth' and not the colour, ok? The in-team fighting started early this week with Nathan Mawby getting paid out by Mrs Thwaites for taking a overseas holiday with his girlfriend and not following current club tradition and getting down on one knee. 'What was the point of even going?' she demanded. (That was so last year – Ed). The game finally started when we found the umpire in the car having a little rest. We started a little slow this week against a young, fast and switched on Waverly team. We were defending well from their 16 yards and were able to intercept a couple and it paid off. With a quick break from Steve and what some (only Thwaiter at last count) are calling the goal of the year when Thwaiter put his body on the line and with a great back stick deflection got the ball in and then collided with the goal post. We held strong for the remainder of the half. And James got a green for yelling at Phil. At half time the message from Zac OCMC was clear: he was angry and frustrated that we were angry and frustrated on field. Talk about irony. He even threatened to pull players off that were too cranky in the second half. Didn't that come back to bite him! The start of the second half was solid hockey from both teams but we kept attacking through the middle with Lance and Adam laying the ball off to either Zac and Yu on the wings or going straight through the guts to Guy at centre forward. This resulted in two quick goals one of which Zac tried to steal on the line from Steve (Zac is still goalless after four rounds). Speaking of OCMC, late in the half he was getting angry and frustrated and was shown a green card for his efforts. Then the umpire’s watch broke and Zac was left on the sideline for six minutes, rather than the regulation two. Fortunately, we held Waverly goalless and finished the game 3-0. MEN's 5s After failing to take home the points in the last two weeks the team was restless. Disappointed in the lack of excessive whinging from their captain, a bloody coup ensued. Current leader James Dzur and his deputy Ross Walker were both stripped of their titles and dropped from the team. The boys felt they needed a more natural leader, someone who oozed confidence and class. Someone who always gave 110% both at training and during the match. Luckily they found it all (plus some) in their former leader Dylan. Immediately their new hope stamped his authority, dropping both the Goal Scoring God (temporarily) as well as his mate Seb ‘The ego’ White (permanently) into the team. In keeping with last year’s theme our keeper was also told he would be playing field. With a new (better) captain & the Goal Scoring God back in the team everything was coming up Millhouse! The captain was at the ground warming-up over an hour before the match was to begin (legit, this actually happened) setting an exemplary example for his charges. Unfortunately his dedication did not rub off onto his underlings and for the second time in two weeks we started a man down. It was a tough match from the outset with Old Carey always a well drilled and skilful team. Our defence was under enormous pressure early on and did amazingly considering we were missing both of our usual halves and both fullbacks. Additionally we lost both replacement fullbacks when Anton injured his shoulder and the Goal Scoring God showed us 5s how to play by stopping a shot on goal with his throat. We’re hopeful this injury stops Nath from constantly trying to pick-up the women of LaTrobe with stories of how he scored a goal. Once. Off a deflection. Unfortunately they managed to sneak two goals in before we could get our passing up and going, but we looked dangerous at times and could’ve easily gone to the break with scores level. Hugs, Alex & Josh ‘I love playing half’ Hannah provided great drive out of defence and were great in the D as well. New recruit Charmander* and Ley ran all day and against any other side would’ve both slotted a couple. Ley in particular got the ‘Judd’ treatment where the whole team constantly passed him the ball and provided minimal support. Permanent 5s player Seb was adequate in defence after adjusting to the fact that our midfield and forward line have less movement than Andrew Chan & Myuran Sukumaran. (Too soon?) (Yes, yes it is too soon. But I’m going to allow it. – Ed) The second half was a brutal arm wrestle with both teams saving numerous shots on goal. Whilst we were unlucky not to make a breakthrough, our defence played an enormous role in ensuring that both teams went through the half scoreless. Ollie & Grant were options up forward all day and will undoubtedly add to their goal count in the coming weeks. Overall it was a tough match, but considering we were missing five of our best XI (all defenders as well) we should’ve been satisfied with an honourable loss. Unfortunately some of the boys seemed to have developed a thirst for blood after the mid-week coup and the new captain was immediately sacked (despite having a much better record than Carlton). We’re back at the same ground next week at 12.30pm on Sunday. Best of luck to our third captain in as many weeks! *Probably not his real name HANDSOME 6s Poor old Knox. I mean how many times have they stepped into the ring with the big boys and copped a bit of ‘Handsome KAPOW’? Among the numerous comments from them was “How the f*** are you guys still playing Metro 4?” And I’m sure there were a few along the lines of. “Gee we really respect you Handsome La Trobe guys, you are really good hockey players and just play in the right spirit”. So we smashed them for the 30th time in a row, including two flags. RJ came in and whilst he played ok, he couldn’t really fill the massive hole in the team. Bags decided that he wanted that GG and laughed like a maniac as he slotted his 14th goal screaming “THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS PASSING IN GOAL SCORING GLORY, YOU LOSERS!” Wazza O turned the clock back and got in the net and fought like a Tiger all game to keep them out. Over all the lads all played well. Crazy Dave was my stand out. He is very athletic and such a clean tackler. A really important player for us. We missed Mark M, Blackers and George. Oh and Sami Dass and The Tasmanians …and without them only just snuck over the line. Rowdy has hurt his back in a jelly wrestling bout, but should be back next week. Tim Sheridan and Glidey were the dominant forwards along with Will and Tom C, nobody else did a lot up there. Toddy Paulson was overcome by four year olds at inflatable world in Bundoora, but is keen to be part of the Handsome’s phenomena. Craig Cameron tried to steal Pricey’s stroke, but then reminded himself about the fourth best and fairest – which is worth more than one stroke. Pricey stepped up to the plate and magnificently slotted the stroke in the top right corner. The ball crashed through the back of the net and ended on Plenty road. Bryn was heard to say, if ‘only I could roof them like that’. Tommy C, backing up from Tim Sheri the weekend before pulled out a world class Risky. We are doing themes now and Tommy C went with Spanish. It was well received especially the 5.2% strength Moritz beer and apart from tequila shots was a very nice touch (Mexico is a province of Spain…look it up….bloody know it all Uni students). Huge game next week against the mighty Collegians. Bookies have us rank outsiders… but I’m going to throw a few on us, it’s just a hunch. MASTERS 45s Round 5 saw a choice – Footscray or Werribee. So 12, no! 11, no! 10, No! 9, (and eventually 10) hardy Latrobe vets arrived at Footscray for a 7pm, err make that 7.30pm, game. The aroma of Footscray industry hit us as we stepped out of our cars, but even before we made it two paces it was quickly followed by another aroma best described as “deep heat”. We were at the right ground! After a quick pick up of resources at the local railway station (players coming from the city, not drugs!) we had our 10 – but for some reason Footscray thought the rules of hockey allowed 11 on the field and interchange! A Glide, back from Gallipoli (and a year or two out of the game) soon sorted this rule out with the umpires, managing to have Footscray’s numbers reduced to 10 (even if only for a few short minutes) after a bit of a disagreement about how tackles should be laid. So it was game on with one player passing it to another who passes it to a third, but with no right inside there were large gaps available for both sides to exploit – or if only we were younger and fitter we would have exploited them. The forwards were able, however, to exploit gaps to the left of the Footscray goals (and sometimes way left of the goals) time and time (and time) again throughout the game. Despite this we did manage to score. Half time saw Latrobe up – our usual position – 3-0, but so far this season this had been turned around by the end of the game. We resolved: NOT THIS TIME – we defended for the first part of the second half to stop Footscray getting a couple of quick goals in and overrunning us. Just a few minutes in this plan was working well with the half line in front of forwards and the back line holding on desperately. Great saves by Charlie Keating – pulling on the pads for the first time in years but showing why he was goalie of the 1990’s “(grass) team of the decade” – combined with a bit of the post and a few simple misses by Footscray ensured we ran out winners (as well as legs) this time. An enjoyable game! UNDER 12s RESULT La Trobe 10 v Footscray 0 GOAL SCORERS Matt 4, Flynn 3, Luke 3 REPORT Women’s Round Back at home for our second round and up against Footscray, against whom our team have had a chequered history. When these kids were U10, Footscray and La Trobe were the top two teams, and our final game set the position on the ladder. We lost that day, only just. This weekend, we didn’t. Our guys put on a bit of a hockey clinic, playing almost the entire game in our own half. Once again, our two goalies Eleanor and Oscar padded up for half a game each, with neither touching the ball for the entire match. Our forwards were very strong. Matt, Flynn, Luke and Ben once again stood out, passing selflessly. Matt nearly scored his second hat trick for the season, broken only by a solid goal from Flynn. Zach, despite this being only his second game, looked like he had been there for years. Ava come in to the side for her first game in the U12, which can be a little daunting, but played really well. Mia just kept on running, despite some minor shoe-lace incidents. Jamie played the perfect goal sneak and Alex W was everywhere, playing his ever reliable defensive and attacking half. Our backs, like last week, were an impenetrable wall, with Oliver and Alex S standing guard, trapping well and returning the ball to our forwards. Grace, with her new shin pads, also played a good game. We wish Aiden well with his shoulder injury and hope Matt has a great time in Japan over the next few weeks. NEXT ROUND Team U12 Venue Home Against Fixture not released Time Fixture not released Day Saturday The Peacock Hotel Player of the Week is back for its second season with the club and the Wrap Up this year. And to celebrate, there will be a second player recognised each week! One from the men’s sides, and one from the women’s. The award recognises players who have shown excellence for the club both on and off the field. While performance on match day is an important part of being a member of the LTUHC, the club has been built on training hard, learning, listening to coaches, improving and supporting your team mates. And of course, being awesome! Coaches will assess these qualities, and on field performance, in selecting players. Thanks to the Peacock for supporting our Player of the Week Award, and for providing the successful members with a $20 voucher to the Peacock Hotel. This week’s winners are Kieren Baxter and Liz Baglin. Kieren Having worked hard all season, Kieren has maintained a positive attitude on the field and at training. In fact he has put in extra work before training on both Tuesdays and Thursdays to further improve his game. A commitment made all the more impressive given he lives in Frankston and doesn’t drive. He has also given time to help the juniors before training. Bags (Liz Baglin) Spearheading the LTUHCs efforts for Women’s Round meant not only organising it, but extensive efforts for the barbecue, the bake sale and for the charity side of the event – helping to raise funds for the White Ribbon association. Many players this weekend donned pink socks and White Ribbon transfers, thanks largely to Bags’ efforts. The LTUHCs efforts for Women’s Round are regarded as among the best in Victoria’s hockey community and that is in no small part thanks to the efforts of Bags. Honourable mention: Ley Betts. Ley is a close runner up to Kieren in travelling from the other side of Melbourne to get to games on a weekly basis. But over the weekend he went above and beyond and in the process he earned what may be the first letter of thanks sent to the Gunners. Ever. (We’re more used to receiving bills for damages caused) Below is the letter from the Toorak East Malvern Hockey Club’s secretary to LTUHC club president Erica Brodie: Hi Erica I would like to pass on our thanks to one of your members. Quite unexpectedly, I received a phone call this morning telling me that we had left a bundle of junior match shirts at our home ground over the weekend. Rather than see the shirts lost, one of your members named Leigh (spelling unknown) took them home, had them washed, tracked me down and drove from Point Cook to Hawthorn to return them to me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t home when he delivered them so I couldn’t thank him personally. Would you please pass on our thanks to Leigh. His efforts are most appreciated. Fun ones. With Blackjack. And … other things. We usually try to reserve our awards for members of the club. But every so often someone from outside the club presents as such a phenomenally worthy candidate that they must be honoured. This week that honour falls to the watch of the second umpire at The Cauldron on Sunday. Across the day his watch set the standard by miss-timing each of the three games he umpired by a minute or so. It also miss-timed a green card given to the captain of the Men’s 4s, keeping him off the field for approximately six minutes instead of the mandated two. But his greatest achievement was miss-timing the start of the Men’s 4s game. After waiting in his car between games, his watch must have forgotten about the game in the middle. With both teams and the other umpire (Phil) on the field, having shaken hands and already moved into their line ups, the second umpire was still in the car. Congratulations to the second umpire’s watch. Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/latrobeunihockey
