1. Look at the pictures, read the text and write the boys’ names.
Peter Grant and Roman Savchenko are friends. Peter lives in the UK. Roman
comes from Ukraine and now he is on holiday in England. The boys spend a lot of
time together. They enjoy playing games, visiting English sights, going to the
cinema or cafes. They often help Peter’s parents, so you can see them working in
the garden, buying food in the supermarket or even cooking in the kitchen. Roman
is interested in British traditions and Peter often asks him about Ukraine. It’s great
to be friends!

14. a) Peter’s classmates invited Mrs Grant to tell them about healthy food.
She asked them to mark the statements as T (true) or F (false). What is your
opinion?
1 Cereals are important because they give energy.
............
2 Eating lots of fruit and vegetables helps to keep you healthy.
............
3 You need a lot of diary products every day.
............
4 Your body likes lots of sweets and soft drinks.
............
5 Your body contains about 60-75 percent of water.
............
Key: 1 T 2 T 3 F 4 F 5 T
b) Read what Mrs Grant recommends and check if you were right.
People cannot live without food. Healthy and balanced diet gives your body
what it needs to keep you healthy.
Look at the pie chart. It looks like a plate of food, doesn't it? It gives some
ideas of which kinds of food (foods) are good for you and how much to eat. Can
you see that some pieces are bigger than others? This is because your body needs
lots of these foods. Eating a balanced diet means that you choose different foods in
the right amounts from each of the food groups every day. It is boring to eat the
same thing all the time, doesn't it?
Bread, cereals/grains, and pasta group
This is the biggest group because you need to choose most of your daily food
from here. These foods are important for you because they give energy.
Vegetables and fruit groups
Eating lots of fruit and vegetables every day helps to keep you healthy too
because they give vitamins and minerals.
Milk, yoghurt and cheese group
This group (sometimes called dairy products) is not big and it means that you
need it every day, but in a moderate (not a big) amount. It is important because it
helps to grow.
Meat, fish, beans, eggs and nuts group
This group is also important to keep you healthy as it makes you strong. But
you can see from its size that your body doesn't need much from this group.
You can see that two groups of foods are not on the plate. They are down in
one corner as foods that you need just a little. They are:
Fats and oils
Even though you need fats and oils to grow and be healthy, there isn't a place
in the plate for them because you can get them from other foods, such as meat,
cheese or butter on your bread.
Sweets, cakes, biscuits and soft drinks
Of course these foods are delicious and give energy. Most children like them,
but the truth is your body doesn’t like having lots of them. So you should have a
little bit of them and not very often, maybe at special occasions like parties or two
- three times a week.
Water
Your body contains about 60-75 percent of water and needs it for a lot of
functions. Drink lots of water.
Eating a balanced diet and exercising every day will help your body to stay
healthy.
Remember the proverb, “You are what you eat.”
c) Read the text and explain the words and phrases in bold.
15. Answer the following questions:
1 Do you think your diet is balanced and healthy?
2 What is wrong in your diet?
3 What do you think of the job of a dietitian?

Today on the menu there are two kinds of soup. The vegetable soup costs forty
pence. The chicken soup costs fifty pence. There are three main courses. They cost
one pound and thirty pence each. Children usually have some vegetables with main
courses. Today there are three kinds of vegetables which are thirty pence each.
There are two types of sandwiches and they cost twenty-five pence each. You can
see three kinds of desserts to choose from. Each of them is fifty pence. Why not to
