UNG Intramural Sports Basketball Rules NFHS Rules will govern play with the following exceptions: Games consist of two 20-minute halves. A running clock is used during the entire 1st half and until 2 minutes remain in the 2nd half (clock stops only for an official or team timeout). During the last two minutes, the clock will stop on all whistles. Half-time will last three minutes. Teams will receive three (3) time-outs per game. All time outs are one-minute in length. If the score is tied after regulation, a series of 3-minute overtime periods will be played until a winner is determined after the end of such a period. The clock will run continuously until the final minute of each overtime period. Teams will receive one timeout per overtime period and timeouts not used in regulation are NOT carried over to the overtime period. Teams must have four players to start. Jewelry is not allowed to worn by any participant during intramural basketball. All players MUST show their valid Saints Card prior to their first game and valid photo ID prior to any subsequent games in order to participate. Each team should have like-colored, numbered jerseys for every player. Legal numbers are expanded to include 0-99. There will be no "Shirts vs Skins" or taped-on numbers. A team will forfeit if it fails to have the proper jersey at game time. All numbers should be on the back and at least 6 inches in height. No basket may be scored on a player control (offensive) foul, regardless of when the ball is released. Two technical fouls on a player or coach will result in an automatic ejection from the game. The ejected player must leave the playing area and meet with the Intramural Director before playing again. NO Dunking is permitted during pre-game warm-ups, during halftime, or after the game. Hanging on the rim is prohibited at all times. Violations of this rule will result in a technical foul. Only one coach per team is permitted on the team bench. Coaches may not call timeouts. There will be a 30-point mercy rule at the 10 minute mark and 20-point mercy rule with 2 minutes remaining in the second half. In the judgment of the officials and supervisor, if a team is dragging or allows the team behind to make up baskets so the game will not be stopped, the game will be stopped immediately. Illegal substitutions will result in a technical foul. Slapping the backboard is not a technical in itself, but intentionally hitting the backboard hard enough to alter the flight of the ball will result in a technical. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. The following behaviors will result in a technical foul and the possibility of a game suspension: Cursing at the officials, supervisors, or opposing players Insulting the officials, supervisors, or opposing players Participating in a fight (AUTOMATIC EJECTION) Other unsportsmanlike acts will also earn a technical foul. All unsportsmanlike fouls result in two free throws and the ball, regardless of whether the foul is on a player or the bench. Players are not allowed to wear casts or braces made of hard, unyielding material on the hand or arm. Knee and ankle braces are permitted but all exposed hinges must be covered. One Team: Participants are only allowed to play on one team for each sport. CO-REC ADDITIONS Teams will consist of 2 males and 2 females with the 5th individual being the choice of each team. There will be NO MORE than 3 participants of one gender on the floor at a time. Teams must have a minimum of 4 players present to begin; with 2 being from each gender. All rules for single gender play apply except for the exceptions stated below: The game will be played with a Women’s ball measuring 28.5” in. in diameter There will be no special treatment or exceptions given to males guarding females or vice versa. A female 2-point basket will count 3 points and a female 3-point basket will count 4 points. If a female is fouled in the act of shooting from inside the 3 point arc, she will be given 3 free throws. If a female is fouled in the act of shooting behind the 3 point arc, she will be given 4 free throws. Once teams enter the bonus, a female fouled in the typical “1&1” free throw situation, will be given a “2&1” free throw situation. Once a team enters the “Double Bonus” free throw situation, a female fouled will shoot 3 free throws. RULES FOR MEN IN REGARDS TO POINTS AND FREE THROW SITUATIONS WILL BE THE SAME AS NORMAL NFHS RULES. Free Throw Changes: Players during a Free throw situation will now be able to move when the BALL IS RELEASED. This excludes the shooter and any players outside the three-point line and free throw line extended. Those players still have to wait until the ball hits the rim.
