Training from International Organizations and Projects
African Health Open Educational Resources (OER) Network
Description: Open Educational Resources (OER) are educational resources that are openly licensed,
so that they can be used, adapted, integrated, and shared any time and place. The African Health OER
Network fosters co-creation of resources, enabling institutions to share knowledge, address curriculum
gaps, and use OER for improving the delivery of health education in Africa. Network aggregates the
results of multiple health education initiatives by collecting, classifying, indexing, and then actively
distributing African-initiated resources with the global health community. You can find existing OER,

get help to create your own, and request particular programs. The Health OER Request Facility has
been set up to provide an online space for academics to solicit health related openly licensed learning
materials. The request will be distributed to members of the African Health OER Network for
potential responses.
Access: Participation in the African Health OER Network is open to all. The primary contributors and
audience are African health academics, faculty and students, first focusing on those whose language of
operation is English.

BMJ Learning
Description: BMJ Learning is one of the leading international online learning resources for medical
professionals. It offers high-quality CME/CPD and postgraduate training for doctors and other
healthcare professionals. It contains over 1000 evidence based modules in text, video, and audio
formats, which are written by experts, and cover a range of clinical and non-clinical topics. Modules
take 60 minutes to complete and you receive a personalised certificate on completion of each module

Building Leadership for Health
Description: The Building Leadership for Health program was first developed in the UK by a
team at a major international consulting firm. They worked with the Aga Khan Foundation
and 5 East African Universities on an EU funded program to develop a common curriculum
for Nurse Leadership and Advanced Nursing Practice in East Africa. On the web-site you can
find materials that you can use for delivering training to your students: PowerPoint

Cochrane Learning
Description: Cochrane Learning from the Cochrane Collaboration is where health professionals can
continue their professional development and improve their clinical practice. Dr Cochrane activities
include an engaging and memorable patient story, five multiple choice questions, and a Cochrane
Review. The activity should take you around one hour to complete. You are not expected to read the
Cochrane Review from start to finish, but we recommend that you read the abstract before you launch
the activity. You can then keep the Cochrane Review open as you answer the multiple choice
questions in a separate window. At the end of the activity you will be asked to evaluate and reflect
upon your learning experience and how you might apply the information to your clinical practice

eCancer Educational Modules
Description: ecancer is an oncology channel committed to improving cancer communication and
education with the goal of optimizing patient care and outcomes. The e-learning education modules
have been produced in association with the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care and are part
of an initiative funded by the BMS Foundation’s Bridging Cancer Care program which aims to
eliminate disparities in cancer treatment by building healthcare capacity, training healthcare workers
and increasing patient awareness, screening and treatment. Available in Italian, Czech, Polish,
Hungarian, Romanian, Russian and English.
Access: Free, after you register for the ecancer club it is possible to record your learning. The
ePortfolio is where you can access content that you manually selected to shortlist on this site. You can
also access content that you've recently viewed, and any Modules from the Education section that you
started / completed will be listed here, along with any CME points, reflection notes and/or evaluation
recorded against these.

Education Development Center (EDC)
Description: EDC advances formal and informal education, health promotion and care, workforce
preparation, communication technology, and civic engagement. EDC’s work is organized by
individually funded projects that are housed in three divisions: Health and Human Development,
International Development, and Learning and Teaching. It offers web-based courses, webinars, and
curricula on numerous topics in health and human development, including: Mental Health;

Description: The e-Institute offers both self-paced and facilitated courses that aim to make learning
engaging and accessible by offering innovative choices tailored to multiple workplace cultures and
learning styles. More than forty-five e-Learning courses address complex real-world problems in

priority areas such as governance, health, cities, climate change, and public private
partnerships. Learners also have access to free monthly podcasts and webinars, video success stories,

Description: FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to improving lives in
lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. Its staff includes experts in health,
education, nutrition, environment, economic development, civil society, gender equality, youth,
research and technology — creating a unique mix of capabilities to address today's interrelated
development challenges. FHI 360 serves more than 70 countries and all U.S. states and territories. It
provides a variety of training and education materials, ranging from toolkits to interactive modules in

Global Health e-Learning Center
Description: The Global Health eLearning Center offers more than 70 courses aimed at increasing
knowledge in a variety of global health technical areas, such as Health systems, HIV/AIDS, Malaria,
Child survival, Family planning, Infectious diseases, monitoring and evaluation, mHealth and more.
Individual courses are also part of certificate programs, listed on the Certificate Program

Global Health Epidemiology
Description: It has been created to support collaboration and capacity building in the practice of
epidemiology globally. It is a professional network for researchers running epidemiology studies in the
field of Global Health for the sharing of knowledge, methods and tools. E-learning short courses are
designed to cover every step, process, and issue that needs to be understood in order to conduct a high

quality clinical study. These courses should take about 45 minutes to complete and a certificate is
issued on completion. Every course is written to be globally applicable, so for all diseases and all
regions. They are also highly pragmatic and adaptable. Each course is carefully researched to provide
up to date and high quality material that is peer reviewed and regularly reviewed and updated.
Also links to other training resources and a series of e-seminars on topics related to conducting clinical
trials in the field of Global Health. They are MP3 (audio) and MP4 (video) files. You will need a
media player to play them.

Global Health Media Project
Description: A growing collection of online training videos on a variety of clinical global health
topics created and distributed by the nonprofit Global Health Media Project, designed to reach lowresource health workers who have no other access to this clinical information. It was founded to put
practical, life-saving knowledge into the hands of healers at the point of care. The newborn care series
provides the target audience of frontline health workers with visual clinical guidelines for training and
review in the clinic setting. The films are meant as complementary training tools, covering the key
points of topics that can be visually conveyed. They can be used in pre-service and in-service
education and be kept by health workers for review in their clinic settings
Access: Free. For health workers without internet connectivity, training NGOs and ministries of health
can distribute them via a USB flash drive or a memory chip in a mobile phone. Available in English,
Swahili and several other languages.

HINARI Training Modules
Description: Access to Research in Health Programme /The HINARI Programme, set up by WHO
together with major publishers, enables developing countries to gain access to one of the world's
largest collections of biomedical and health literature. More than 7,500 information resources are now
available to health institutions in 105 countries, areas and territories benefiting many thousands of
health workers and researchers, and in turn, contributing to improved world health.

Training modules on Internet search, use of HINARI resources, resources on evidence-based medical
practice, authorship skills. The individual training modules are continually refined following
workshops throughout the world. The training material can be used by librarians and researchers alike,
and in an individual or group environment. These PowerPoint presentations and Word documents are
downloadable from the Training page. Each module presented builds on the previous, is supplemented
by tutorial sessions and can be adapted for local training. The material is also available in CD-ROM
format by emailing HINARI. The CD-ROM may be used on-line or without an Internet connection
when not available.
The HINARI Short Course (for users) and the HINARI Train the Trainers Course (for trainers from
developed countries) are online on the Medical Library Association (USA) distance learning server.
These courses are self-paced, take 4-6 hours. Upon completion of the exercises, students will receive
certificates.
Video Series consist of short videos that users at HINARI institutions can watch to learn HINARI
basics, such as what is HINARI, how to access e-journals via HINARI, and how to search PubMed via
HINARI. Videos are available online, and can also be freely downloaded or ordered on CD for no
charge. Audio and text files are included. The website includes optional online quizzes and exercises.
The whole series can be watched in under 30 minutes.

HRH Global Resource Center (GRC)
Description: The Human Resources for Health Global Resource Center, a management service of
CapacityPlus, a USAID-funded project led by IntraHealth International. The HRH Global Resource
Center eLearning platform offers free courses developed by technical experts in the fields of human
resources for health, health informatics and health service delivery to build the capacity of countrybased users in critical skills development.
Access: Users will create an account for free, providing them with an "enrollment key," which will
allow them to access a variety of courses, some of which are offered in cohort over the course of
several weeks.

Information Management Resource Kit (IMARK)
Description: IMARK is mobilizing and building upon existing resources to create a comprehensive
suite of distance learning resources for information management and knowledge sharing. IMARK
supports agencies, institutions and networks world-wide, and helps them to work together and share
information more effectively. This Kit is a series of 7 online courses: Strategic Approaches to
Information; Management of Spatial Information; Knowledge Sharing for Developing; Digital
Libraries, Repositories, and Documents; Social Media for Development; Networking in Support of
Development; Building Electronic Communities and Networks.

Asynchronous e-learning offers users the option of taking a course or a specific lesson whenever
needed. It is often referred to as "just in time" learning. In addition to the e-learning materials, each
course provides links to online resources, recommended reading, self-study tutorials, checklists and
job aids.

I-TECH Clinical Education Modules
Description: I-TECH's Clinical Education Modules are designed for mid-level health care providers
in resource-limited settings, and available online for learners worldwide. The topics and speakers are
varied, but each module typically presents cutting-edge research and thinking from university-based
clinicians. The Modules are designed to be useful both for self-study and as the foundation of an hourlong classroom training session. They are optimized for online use in low-bandwidth settings, and also
available for download and use offline.
Each module consists of: 30-40 Minute Online Educational Unit, 5 Minute Concept-Reinforcing
Online Quiz Unit is intended for online self-paced learners, or as homework for classroom learners,
this online interactive quiz uses questions, cases, or interactive methods to reinforce the learning
objectives of the main educational unit, 3 Page PDF Teaching Guide which includes: an overview of
learning objectives and intended audience for the unit, suggested discussion topics and class activities,
additional resources and references.

Description: Medical Aid Films aims to save the lives of vulnerable women and children in the

Open Resources for Nurse Educators
Description: It is a place to share curriculum content and other educational materials that are free for
use by nurse educators. Since 2003, Canadian volunteers sponsored by Mid-Main Community Health
Centre have worked in Bangladesh to establish a nursing program. They developed a 4-year Bachelor
of Science in Nursing [BSN] program for ESL learners, which has been approved by the Bangladesh
Nursing Council and is being used at the International University of Business Agriculture and
Technology. BSN Open Educational Resource (OER) provides an integrated package that includes:
Student Learning Resources, Classroom Resources for Educators and Program Resources. This
package includes not only classroom lectures (mostly PowerPoint presentations), but also student and
teacher references, assignments and exams, checklists for clinical practice, and administrative policies.

Description: In this section you will find different Research4Life training material to download for

ReproLinePlus
Description: The site offers evidence-based materials and state-of-the-art learning opportunities in a
range of technical areas and programmatic approaches. ReproLinePlus is sponsored and developed by
Jhpiego (http://www.jhpiego.org). Jhpiego is an international non-profit health organization affiliated
with The Johns Hopkins University. For more than 35 years and in over 150 countries, Jhpiego has
worked to prevent the needless deaths of women and their families. Jhpiego works with health experts,
governments and community leaders to provide high-quality health care for their people. Jhpiego
develops strategies to help countries care for themselves by training competent health care workers,
strengthening health systems and improving delivery of care.

Supercourse
Description: Supercourse is a repository of lectures on global health and prevention designed to
improve the teaching of prevention. Supercourse has a network of over 135,000 scientists in 174
countries who are sharing for free a library of 165,820 lectures in 33 languages. The Supercourse has
been produced at the WHO Collaborating Center University of Pittsburg. There are also lectures
devoted to information technologies in health care, use of Internet, e-learning methods, developing
web-based courses, and other related topics.
Supercourse does not grant degrees or certificates, but is designed to be a resource for
teachers, professors, and other educators. Supercourse does not provide access to faculty
members developing the modules. You may submit your lecture(s) as Microsoft PowerPoint
Presentations.

1000+ OBGYNs
Description: Providers and students in low-resource countries will now have access to high-quality
academic learning and teaching materials to help reduce maternal and new-born deaths in sub-Saharan
Africa. The materials are available through a new collection created by the University of Michigan’s
1000+ OBGYNs Project - a network of American and African universities preparing to train more
than 1000 new Obgyns in the region in 10 years.

Training Resource Package for Family Planning (TRP)
American International Health Alliance
Description: The Training Resource Package for Family Planning (TRP) is a comprehensive set of
materials designed to support up-to-date training on family planning and reproductive health. The TRP
was developed using evidence-based technical information from World Health Organization (WHO)
publications: Family Planning: A Global Handbook for Providers; the latest WHO Medical Eligibility
Criteria for Contraceptive Use; and Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use.
The TRP contains curriculum components and tools needed to design, implement, and evaluate
training. It provides organizations with the essential resource for family planning (FP) and
reproductive health trainers, supervisors, and program managers. The materials are appropriate for
pre-service and in-service training and applicable in both the public and private sectors. Games,
energizers, and how-to references are to help trainers feel more confident in designing and conducting
trainings. They can be useful supplements to any of the TRP Modules.
June 2015 note: Several modules on this site may be affected by revisions to the Medical Eligibility
Criteria (MEC) for Contraceptive Eligibility being released soon by the World Health Organization.
The Training Resource Package team will be working to update the content of this module in the
coming months. You may still use the existing materials, but please review the Executive Summary
for important changes. The new MEC Wheel can be used as an interim resource until the full revisions
are released.

Tutorials for Africa
Description: The National Library of Medicine (NLM) in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine
at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda initiated the MedlinePlus African Tutorials as a teaching
tool. Medical students, health workers and staffs of clinics can use the tutorials in both electronic and
hard copy formats to educate the general public. An advisory group of African scientists and
physicians from across the continent identified top health concerns.
The MedlinePlus African Tutorial topics reflect those concerns identified by the group. NLM created
the first MedlinePlus African Tutorial on malaria in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and a
team of Ugandan doctors, medical students, artists, and translators. Faculty members worked with an
artistic team to create locally meaningful text and illustrations for the tutorials. The malaria tutorial
was then field tested in villages by medical students and translated into five local languages Japadhola, Luganda, Luo, Runyankole and Swahili. The second tutorial is devoted to diarrhea. (Last
updated in 2011).

Description: The Virtual Campus of Public Health is a network of people, institutions and
organizations that share courses, resources, services and activities of education, information and
knowledge management in training. Is itself a tool of the technical cooperation of the Pan American
Health Organization (PAHO) for networked learning in the region of the Americas. Self-paced courses
and courses with tutoring.You can search for educational resources in the OER Network, regional

World Health Organization’s (WHO) Health Academy
Description: The academy's eLearning package of health courses provides more than just distance
education. The graphics, animation and interactive features have been designed to engage people so
that they can enjoy the learning experience. The package introduces basic principles of health
awareness and encourages students to build on their knowledge, which helps them to develop critical
thinking. Through its courses, the academy provides health guidance in terms easily understood by a
wide range of people, and in consideration of cultural sensitivities and traditions. Information is first
prepared in English and then translated into other languages as required.
