C A S E S T U DY Patcraft Customer Story: Because Flooring Matters When you think of off-campus apartments for university students, you might envision boring, bland interiors with old carpet and fixtures, thin walls, and leaky faucets. You’ll find something very different, and desirably attractive at Pulaski Square Luxury Townhomes in Columbia, South Carolina. Here, University of South Carolina Gamecocks enjoy upscale residences where they can live, study, and relax in style. Pulaski Square Luxury Townhomes C A S E S T U DY Columbus, Ohio-based The Woda Group designed and developed the 40-unit townhome complex, and installed an array of Patcraft flooring to achieve the contemporary, fun look they desired. Each two-story townhouse in Pulaski Square has three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an open-concept living and dining area, laundry, and a modern kitchen. Residents also enjoy a clubhouse and community room, fitness center, and media room for study. “I started helping the developers with flooring selections, and I finally honed in on one product: Patcraft broadloom. It looked good down and it also wears well,” says Woda Group interior designer Cheryl Cooper. To give the townhome interior spaces and community facilities a homelike, yet contemporary look, Cooper chose not only Patcraft broadloom, but also resilient and carpet tile. WEARS WELL, LOOKS GREAT “The three main factors I used when selecting flooring for this project were durability, affordability and attractiveness of design,” says Cooper, who not only works as Woda Group’s interior designer but also owns her own design boutique, Three French Hens, in Columbus. “In the past, we used to rent carpet for housing units, because you only get one or two turns out of it. But the quality of those products was not something that you’d get if you used it anywhere else, and most of the time, it wasn’t long-lasting. So we decided to go with this new resilient product, the wood planks, instead, and very short-loop broadloom commercial carpet.” By working with her Patcraft account executive, Cooper also found that carpet tile would be a good fit for the community rooms and fitness center of these upscale student residences. She wanted products that would offer the type of high design you find in private homes, but durable enough to hold up to foot traffic, food spills at parties, and other types of damage. “She got us thinking about carpet tiles for the first time, because they are so much more affordable in price, and if one square is damaged, you can just pull it out and replace it,” says Cooper. Carpet tile patterns were installed in quarter turns in some cases, as well as mitre or monolithic patterns, all to create a “fun, almost herringbone look,” she says. Pulaski Square Luxury Townhomes HOMELIKE ENVIRONMENTS Pulaski Square’s spacious, sleek townhomes offer students homelike environments where they can study, socialize or unwind. Cooper installed Patcraft’s Wood Planx resilient in Charred Oak in areas like townhouse living and dining areas. She also installed Woodland View resilient in Flax, and Homeroom v. 3.0 broadloom in Midterms in these contemporary, yet warm residential units. For the community rooms, fitness room, and manager’s office, Cooper installed practical, eyecatching carpet tile patterns: Aire in Phoenix, Vivid and Vim in Night Sky, and Geometrix in Pinstripe. “In some more heavily trafficked areas, such as the small kitchen in the community room, which is like a clubhouse, we went with resilient, as well as in the main walkway entrance to the building, and the walkway to the fitness room,” says Cooper. A study area has carpet tile to create the quiet, calming environment that students need to concentrate on their work. “I think it all looks great!” says Cooper. “It’s exactly what we hoped for with respect to the look and feel of it. Our projects are ‘homier’ than most student housing. We make selections of furniture, décor or flooring that you might see in someone’s private home or in a boutique hotel. We select unique looks.” Cooper’s positive reaction to the Patcraft flooring is shared by the Gamecock students who’ve moved into these attractive new townhomes, she says. “I’ve only heard from the people who have been there that they love it,” she says. “This was our first student housing project at Woda Group. We steered toward flooring that was very durable, but also nicely designed and affordable.” Patcraft had just the right products to make the grade.
