School The School of Medicine has an annual intake of 130 undergraduate medical students for its highly rated, innovative integrated MBChB five year course which is committed to “Graduating Excellent Clinicians”. In its most recent visit to the School (December 2012) the GMC QABME team reported “the Keele curriculum prepares students well for working as a foundation doctor” and “F1 supervisors we met were impressed with the can-do attitude and maturity of Keele graduates”. The Keele MBChB course was 1st in the National Student Survey for Medicine 2015, and was rated 6th in the Guardian League for Medicine in 2016. The School also offers a range of programmes, modules and short courses in postgraduate medicine aimed at addressing the differing needs of healthcare professionals at different stages in their careers. Courses offered include Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters in Medical Education, Masters in Medical Science with a range of specialist routes such as Stroke, Surgery and Audit, and a range of Clinical Leadership and Management courses. The School also offers 2 successful full-time Masters courses, in Cell & Tissue Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. Accountable to: Head of School Responsible to: Director of Medical Science Grade: Grade: 6b Incremental Scale: Yes Starting Salary: £30,728 pro rata 1 Hours: Full time 35 hours per week Role Summary: To work as a member of the team who deliver teaching to undergraduate students within the School. The main teaching elements of the post will be based around PBL tutoring, delivery of laboratory practicals and assessment for Years 1, 2 & 3 of the MBChB programme, with a focus on the physiological aspects of the curriculum. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Work Processes and results Contribute to teaching and assessment activity within the medical curriculum, particularly in association with performance and practical activities. Contribute to the development of appropriate learning support resources to support student learning in connection with performance and practical activities. Provide a range of direct teaching services, as allocated by the line manager; this will include assisting with or delivering performance and practical sessions, revision classes (probably on a student sign-up basis) and may include seminars and lectures. To become familiar with a wide range of practical classes in a variety of relevant contexts (e.g. laboratories, the anatomy suite, experiential learning sessions). Take part in Problem-Based Learning tutoring (training will be provided as appropriate) Conduct student assessments: including Objective Structured Skills Examinations (OSSE) stations (training will be provided) Assist with the marking of examination papers as appropriate (e.g. Key feature questions) Assess student progress and provide feedback Contribute to performance and practical teaching to students from other relevant disciplines in the Faculty and University Provision of documentation, learning resources and self-assessment tools (quizzes, etc.) for student learning. Preparation and setting out of audio-visual materials or facilities as required. Instruction, assistance and guidance to undergraduate and postgraduate students as required. Assist in the selection process for entering medical students, including acting as a member of interview panels Teach in a developing capacity in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures. Transfer knowledge in the form of practical skills, methods and techniques. Ensure that content, method of delivery, and learning materials will meet the defined learning objectives. Challenge thinking, foster debate and develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking. Supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning problems. Contribute to collaborative decision marking with colleagues on academic content, and on the assessment of students’ work. Reflect on practice and the development of own teaching and learning skills Collaborate with colleagues to identify and respond to students’ needs. Team Work Actively participate as a member of the teaching team. Participate in decisions affecting the work of the team. Contribute to the development of curriculum modules and units. Liaising with the Multi-user Laboratory Manager and other technical staff, organising the 2 learning resources for each practical class, providing relevant documentation and presentations, etc., and ensuring that the correct materials are set out for each class. Assist with training more junior staff (e.g. demonstrators) or sessional staff in the use of medical laboratory equipment. Ad hoc cover when Technical staff are absent Helping technical staff at busy “swap over” periods. Tidy away equipment when required. Occasional setting out of practical classes to prescribed standards. This may involve the moving and lifting of items (some heavy). Communication / Documentation Communicate effectively across a wide range of audiences. Liaise, establish and maintain positive links with external agencies and providers.
