Environmental Education Pack
Year Group : First Level
Lesson Theme : Immediate Environment
Time :
Curriculum for Excellence : Science / Planet Earth / Biodiversity
Main Curriculum Experiences and Outcomes:
• I can distinguish between living and non-living things. I can sort living things into groups and
explain my decisions. SCN 1-01a
• I have explored my senses and can discuss their reliability and limitations in responding to the
environment SCN 1-12a
• Throughout all my learning, I take appropriate action to ensure conservation of materials and
resources, considering the impact of my actions on the environment. TCH 1-12a
Lesson Overview:
By encouraging exploration using various games
and challenges the learners will gain an
appreciation and understanding of their
immediate environment. Whilst exploring the
learner will have opportunity to identify some of
the common plants, trees and animals found in
that particular environment. Various fun games
and activities will help to reinforce the topic. The
journey sticks will encourage the learners to take
a closer look at their immediate environment,
providing a memory and story of the day’s
activities. Nature’s palette will give an insight to
the diversity of colours and textures which are
found in the natural world.
Suggested Learning Activities: Ranger Led Walk
Exploration – of the woodland / grassland /
wetland to experience what makes it special.
This then lends itself nicely to investigating the
specific plants, birds and minibeasts that live
there.
Habitat Jigsaw – a larger scale scene where we
have to identify which creature lives where.
Journey stick – Whilst exploring the learner
collects items to remind them of their journey,
telling a story of the day’s events.
Natures Palette – in each different environment
we experience things differently.
Natural Art – using the natural material we find in
any particular environment, we can create a work
of art to express ourselves and how we feel.
