Executive Board 2016-2017 Holly Minniti Gail Kramer Jan Keck (with Carol Dunlap) Dianne Gardner Terri Davisson Sandra MacDonald President 1st V.P. 2nd V.P Secretary Treasurer Past President March 2017 Committee Chairpersons 2016-2017 PRESIDENT Dear Members, Timing is everything! While we’ve been able to play every Tuesday (because of a serendipitous switch to the Resort Course for both days of our Club/Net Championship) the Men’s club has been shut out of their Wednesday play twice already this season. Weather has been… well, rather un-Southern California-like. Easy to get into a habit of griping about it, but just remind yourself how many areas in the country can’t even consider playing outside right now let alone riding around for 4 hours on a golf course. While we’ve had just a couple of frost delays and our creek has resembled a raging river in some instances you have to admit that course management is doing a good job of getting us out there. A big thank you is due, also, to all the ladies here that work hard behind the scenes to make our regular play days and tournaments run pretty darn smoothly! March, we’re in full swing this season with many members still here. Good thing, too. Looks like we’re finally in for some warmer and sunnier weather. To go with those good times and good spirits we have our Beat the Club Champ/Spring Fling Luncheon on March 21st. Please be sure to sign up and bring cash for the small luncheon fee. For those of you new to the event - the Cimarron Golf Club is a great venue and, of course, Marilyn Palfrey puts her personal spin on it to make it just lovely! For more information, check out Marilyn’s SOCIAL column. If you’re in town into April - it’s time to start thinking about the BYOT (bring your own team) event. Check Jan’s WEEKLY TOURNAMENTS/PLAY column for more details. Sign-ups with Jan Keck have already begun. So start thinking about who you’d like to play with for a fun day and some stress free golf! Lot’s of great events, many more opportunities to golf with friends, and check out those views. Nothing more decadent than golfing in short sleeves with snow capping the mountains around us. Palm Springs is sometimes referred to Heaven’s Waiting Room. Instead of what some might consider a negative connotation - I consider it a compliment. It’s so beautiful here it certainly feels like we ARE one step closer to nirvana! Enjoy! HOLLY MINNITI ….......................................................................... TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE What a tournament!! Rain, rain and more rain! With last minute planning, our ‘Board” approved to play both Championship rounds on the RESORT course. With heavy rain prior to both tournament rounds, our ladies played in wet course conditions, ‘winter rules,’ rushing water and puddles throughout the course. With strong will and perseverance, everyone made the best of it and competed hard for the record amount of prizes for this year. Our 2017 Club Champion is Gail Kramer; Net Champion is Debbie Phippin. Congratulations to all our winners this year! Below is our complete list of 2017 winners. A note from our Desert League President: Please let your friends know they can come out and join us to play anytime as your guest but cannot share in the winnings. We hope this will encourage them to join. CHARLENE WITHERS GAIL KRAMER .................................................................... ………………………………………………………..... WSCGA WEEKLY TOURNAMENTS/PLAY A reminder for April 4th we have the BYOT (bring your own team) play day. Each foursome must have at least one Tahquitz member in it. You may bring three guests if you'd like, and no handicap is required. There is no overall game, however, we are doing pin prizes for members and guests for closest to the pin, chips-ins and most accurate drive. Besides your green fee, it is $5 per person/$20 per team. The entry fee will need to be paid in advance to Jan Keck by Tuesday, March 21st. We will be limited to 60 players and we will be playing on the Resort Course. JAN KECK AND CAROL DUNLAP ……………………………………………………… A TEAM PLAY We came in second place this year gross with Indian Springs the winner. I suppose it is only fair to let another team win every once in a while. Remember to pay your annual dues early so you are eligible to play next year. We had 19 women participate this year and we appreciated everyone's support and team effort. We also celebrated our victory from last year a bit late (this past Wednesday), however fun was had by all.....and there are stories to tell. KAREN WEISS AND FRAN NOCELLA B TEAM PLAY It is in the WSCGA Board's reasoned judgment that our association's best path moving forward to achieve their stated goals of continuing key programs and services and enhancing women's golf in Southern California would be through the unification of our association with the SCGA. If you are wondering why unify? Well, the WSCGA Board believes that unifying with the SCGA provides its members and clubs, the best option to continue to receive the same core programs and services they are accustomed to, including tournaments, Team Play, USGA Handicaps, Course Rating and rules education, as well as the continued support for junior golf. The USGA recently named the SCGA as our region's Allied Golf Association. In addition, due to the SCGA'S expanded resources and size, unifying will provide WSCGA members with new benefits such as discounted playing opportunities, social/casual outings, partner discounts, access to SCGA group travel as well as other SCGA member benefits. There are still many details to work out, but basically, the WSCGA is very excited about the potential to become part of the SCGA'S community of more than 140,000 male and female golfers. As a club, we need to vote on this unification and I will cast our vote on this recommendation at an upcoming WSCGA Special Meeting in mid-April. Any questions that you have may be answered on the comprehensive FAQ page that I have placed on our bulletin board and on each table. FRAN NOCELLA ………………………………………………………..... RULES HANDICAP THE USGA PROPOSES MODERNIZATION AND SIMPLIFICATION OF THE RULES Most Improved Golfers from 12/1/2016 to 3/1/2017 On March 1st the USGA released a draft of proposed epic changes to the Rules of Golf. The massive overhaul of the rulebook isn’t just about common-sense changes to the rules, it’s also about making the rules easier to read, easier to understand and easier to apply. In fact, these proposals would actually reduce the number of rules from 34 to 24. Starting Ending Margaret Smith Joann Carbonetti Gail Kramer Helen Conley Pat Dutkiewicz 10.1 21.6 7.6 16.6 23.6 7.6 18.3 5.9 14.3 21.3 Highlights of the proposed changes include: -Water Hazards being redefined and simplified as “penalty areas” and allowing for the grounding of clubs, practice swings and removal of loose impediments in these areas. Also allowing desert areas, jungle, woods, lava rocks, etc to be included in the “penalty area” definition. Good Job Ladies! It makes for very interesting reading. After a period of input from the general public and issuance of a final draft, the proposed changes would go into effect on January 1, 2019. Until then, we’ll play under the Rules as currently written. You can find materials, articles and videos about the proposed changes at www.usga.org/rules. 1 MARGARET SMITH ……………………………………………………. 17R 1 MEMBERSHIP 17R 1 Coming soon: Watch for the 2017-2018 Membership form in your inbox. JOAN HEETER ……………………………………………………… PUBLICITY If you missed last month’s announcement, here’s a reminder. Hello Ladies – If you haven’t already done so, please go visit the Tahquitz Creek Women’s Golf Club official page and like and follow it. This is our FB page where the leadership can post news about the group. We also have a group discussion page, called the same title of Tahquitz Creek Women’s Golf Club. This is a discussion page where anyone in the group can post. It’s a closed group and you have to ask to join the group, but don’t let that stop you as we will approve you quickly. At some point, we will probably just have the discussion page but for now we have the two pages. I know it’s confusing but please do like and follow both. We have had quite a few postings from our members with lots of fun pictures, too. It’s great to see everyone participating. Keep it up! CAMILLE VICTOUR …………………………………………………………..
