The issues
• In the literature, it has been argued that MBSR
has its limitations.
• Religion has found to have therapeutic effects
on undesirable behaviors and enhance self
control power. This may be used to trained
subjects to drop bad behaviors.
Benefits and Limitation in applying
mindfulness practice
Garland et. al. (2014)
Expt for the treatment
for SUDs (N = 165).
A bias corrected
boostrap indicated
that the indirecteffect
through negative
affect was significant,
as was the indirect
effect through
reappraisal.
However, a bias corrected boostrap indicated that the indirect effect through
readiness to change was not Significant.
Benefits and Limitation in applying
mindfulness practice
+ Emotion regulation
+ Cognitive reappraisal
- Readiness to change
x Judgment and certain degree of self-criticism is
necessary to enact the process of recovery
(Garland, 2014).
x Pleasantness alone is inadequate to direct
activation (Wilson and Murrell, 2011).
Research questions
1. What are the mechanisms of MBSR?
•
•
Inhibition through exposure to reduce novelty of the
negative stimulus.
Stop all response to the stimulus would break the
neural connection for bad habit.
2. Could Bible teaching involve similar
mechanisms? If so, how? Would bible
teaching has other mechanisms for change?
Hypotheses
1. Bible teaching involves mechanisms for self control made more
effective through awareness training.
• The undesirable urge is trained to be aware as the degenerative
self (comparable to the old self in the bible) that would do harm
to the normal self. Subjects are trained to ignore it. This would
produce the effect of mindfulness training.
• The teaching of high power (God) could be enhanced. The use
on non-religious people is possible as indicated by the AA
program (Pearce & Koenig, 2013). Externally, this high power is
trained to be aware of as a watching eye, internally as a
reminding conscience. Subjects are trained to be sensitive and
responsive to them.
• Subjects of the bible group go through a ceremony and identify
themselves as a member of a rebirth group. Subjects are trained
to be constantly aware of the self identity.
Hypotheses
• The above three training are compatible with the
teaching of Rom 6. The first effect is comparable to
mindfulness producing inhibition and dissociation.
The latter two are unique in the bible teaching.
2. It is hypothesized that such principle could be
generalized in the secular realm. Only that it would
be more effective for Christians with the power of the
Holy Spirit.
Suggested test
• Suggest to use treatment on smoking addiction
for testing its effect
• Compare three groups:
– Bible, MBSR, and control
• Randomly assign addicts to three group for
training for eight weeks and monitor the
improvement.
• Expect the bible group could have similar
therapeutic effect to the MBSR group if not better.
