ENGLAND HOCKEY BACKGROUND
England Hockey (EH) is the National Governing Body for the sport of Hockey in England with an
income and expenditure of circa £10m per annum. It is responsible for the management and
development of the sport from grass roots to elite activities. England Hockey is also nominated
by all the home nations to manage the Great Britain International programme.
This is a really exciting period for EH having recently successfully hosted the Unibet EuroHockey
Championships 2015 and won the rights to host three major world level events starting with the
Champions Trophy in 2016, followed by World League III 2017, and culminating in the Women’s
World Cup in 2018.
EH’s vision is to become a ‘Nation Where Hockey Matters’ through “providing inspirational
leadership for all to fulfil their potential”. The current focus for the organisation is the delivery of
its five objectives within the 2013 -2017 strategic plan. Major events provide a key vehicle to the
wider business to support many aspects of this delivery:
 Growth in participation - Increase the number of people participating in hockey
 International success - Continue to raise the performance bar of athlete and coach
development and create positive role models for the sport
 Increased visibility - Deliver high profile domestic and international events that attract
increased spectator numbers, TV coverage, and sponsorship
 Enhanced infrastructure - Enhance the playing experience by improving facilities,
coaching and officiating
 A strong and respected NGB - Continue to maintain high governance standards.
Assistant Coach – Senior Women
ROLE SUMMARY
Reporting to the Head Coach, the coach will be responsible for working with the senior England
and Great Britain team for the upcoming Olympic cycle with the aim of delivering podium success
at Commonwealth, European and World Level and at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The priorities for the role are:



To work with the Head Coach on the selection, preparation, coaching and performance
of the England and Great Britain team.
To support the delivery of a high performance culture that underpins systemic success.
To contribute to the leadership and longer term development of the performance
programme
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coaching


Be responsible for designing, delivering and reviewing pitch sessions for the England and
Great Britain national Squads, both through the central programme, at Bisham Abbey,
and when the team is travelling for matches / competitions, as directed by the Head
Coach.
Deliver high-level tactical analysis of opposition, and ourselves in real-time (during
matches), prior to matches / tournaments and when reviewing matches / tournaments,
using appropriate technology (e.g. Sportscode).
Planning and monitoring



Support the Head Coach on annual and cyclical plans for:
o The England and GB team
o Individual athletes
Monitor and evaluate athlete performance and store relevant data to ensure standards
are met and potential is maximised.
Work collaboratively with all support staff throughout the programme to assist with the
monitoring and development of athletes.
Administration



Work with the commerical team to ensure effective integration of commerical
relationships and communications
An understanding and commitment to equal opportunities in employment and equity

Other duties as directed



Contribute to the leadership and development of the wider high performance programme.
Assist in England and Great Britain promotional activities where required.

Qualifications and Experience:









Experience of successful performance achievements at the international level in a
coaching capacity.
Experience and proven capability in the holistic development of athletes and
programmes.
Demonstrated experience in planning, organising and implementing a comprehensive
high performance coaching programme for elite teams and athletes.
Experience of coaching within a high performance team and network, ensuring the
potential of all contributors was maximised.
Knowledge of leading trends in coaching, including coaching science, practices and the
appropriate application of leading technology tools.
The ability to effectively work with and apply expertise from support services to ensure
team success.
The ability to attain excellence from players, coaches, staff and all stakeholders through
the establishment of a ‘winning’ culture.
A minimum of four years of high performance coaching experience that has achieved
demonstrable results.
A full Driving Licence.

Outstanding technical knowledge of individual and team principles including techniques,
tactics, coaching trends and international developments.
In-depth understanding and application of the principles of coaching, sport science,
medicine and technology within a high performance programme.
Well-developed liaison, interpersonal, oral and written communication, and people
management skills.

Outstanding communication skills – verbal and written.
Sound administration skills.
Self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.
Demonstrated ability to meet competing demands through effective prioritisation in a

This role is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check which will be carried out by EH.
