Level 2 Course Outline

CTS - FASHION STUDIES COURSE OUTLINE – LEVEL 2
Please review the following course outline with your son or daughter.
Career and Technology Studies (CTS) provides students with practical, hands on learning
experiences. In CTS, students have the opportunity to solve problems and produce
useable products.
Teachers: Ms. Davidge
MODULE: SEWING FUNDAMENTALS
This course will take an introductory look at Fashion Studies. Students will review how
to safely use and care for sewing and pressing equipment. Further learning will involve
determining pattern size, preparing the fabric and pattern for layout. Students will then
apply this knowledge to the construction of a sewing project based upon their ability.
KEY LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Students will review and develop skills in:
 understanding the importance of safety in the Fashion Studies lab regarding
sewing tools and safe use of the steam iron. (review)
 identifying sewing machine parts and understanding their function. (review)
 identifying sewing, cutting, ironing and pressing tools, as well as, being able
to explain their function. (review)
 identify and define terminology related to the construction of fabric
 identify international care labels
 identifying basic pattern symbols and applying them to the construction of
their project.
 following pattern instructions and managing class time in the construction of
a sewing project.
ASSESSMENT:
Assessment of learning may include quizzes and a sewing project
Class assignments are considered formative learning.
Duo tangs will be checked for neatness, order and completeness
Lab clean up will be checked at the end of each class for appropriate standards of
completion
EXPECTATIONS:
Assignments:
All students are expected to complete all work according to their ability. It is not
acceptable for a student to not hand in an assignment. If assignments are too difficult
or require more explanation, it is essential that the student take the responsibility for
discussing alternatives with the teacher, well in advance of the due date.
It is very important that students bring fabric and supplies as soon as possible, so
they are able to complete their projects on time. As this is a school project in which
observation is a large part of their formative grading all work MUST be completed at
school. The fashion studies room will be open during scheduled noon hours and
arrangements can be made with me for anyone wishing to stay after school. After
school arrangements need to be made in advance of the day requested so that I can
make the proper accommodations.
Expected Behavior:
 Students are expected to follow the school policy in regards to behavior, as
outlined in the student agenda and parent handbook.
 Regular and punctual attendance is required. If you know you will be absent
please see your teacher ahead of time to get and necessary handouts and arrange
extra lab time if needed.
 Behave in a respectful, responsible, and positive manner toward the teacher, the
equipment, the tools, and the other students.
 Keep neat, orderly, and complete work.
 ALWAYS have a pen or pencil, agenda and duo tang
 Read and use student agendas to record assignments, quizzes and due dates.
 Hand in assignments on time
In addition CTS students are expected to:



Dress in an appropriate manner for CTS (closed shoes and short or fitted sleeves
in the Fashion’s room)
All handouts, worksheets, quizzes, and samples are kept in a duo tang
Hopefully, enjoy learning new skills and develop new interests.
Electronic Devices:
In the last several years it is evident that students have been bringing to school
numerous types of electronic devices. I wish to discourage students from bringing
them to class as they are very expensive and I will not assume responsibility for the
loss or damage of these devices.. We have a lot of movement within the classroom
and move items around on the tables frequently. I would prefer for my classes that
these devices be kept in the student’s locker.
If a student fails to adhere to these guidelines the device will be confiscated and
placed in the office at the end of the class period for students to pick up based upon
the school policy.
