Primary purpose of the role
Lead the design and implementation of the Centre for Work Health and Safety’s data insights and analytics
functions, capabilities and plans, with a strong focus on cross agency collaboration and evidence informed
decision making.
Key accountabilities








Lead and manage the insights and analytics function for the Centre for WHS including collecting,
administrating, analysing, interpreting results and ongoing improvement of data quality to inform best
practice risk-based harm prevention programs.
Identify, develop and maintain effective and evidence-based injury and illness surveillance systems to drive
sophisticated statistical modeling, predictive analysis and actionable insights to inform policy decisions and
harm prevention strategies.
Provide technical leadership in collecting, managing and distributing data intelligence for use by SafeWork
NSW, other key partners and the NSW community.
Manage the support, maintenance and enhancement of data and analytic systems to enable timely,
accurate and usable data intelligence.
Maintain knowledge of current developments in information management and champion the application of
innovative techniques for storing, mining, managing and delivering data
Contribute to strategies, programs, policies and procedures to determine and achieve enhanced
compliance outcomes.
Facilitate strong working relationships and service agreement with key internal and external stakeholders to
support collaboration, the exchange of information and timely resolution of data intelligence issues aligned
to agreed data management plans.
Develop and lead the WHS Insights & Analytics team and culture to enable the successful delivery of
highly respected services and business objectives.
Key challenges

Working with large data sets from a large number of different sources, with the sources potentially having
data privacy, integrity and integration issues

Maintaining technical competence and knowledge in the Centre, legislation, processes and procedures in a
constantly changing work environment
Developing and maintaining constructive relationships and optimising business outcomes given multiple

appropriate delivery of effective analytics for the Centre

Contribute to a client-focussed approach to service delivery

Manage and the flow of information, seek clarification and provide advice
and respond to ensure prompt resolution of issues

Seek/maintain specialist knowledge/ advice and collaborate on the
implementation and delivery of data intelligence plans
Participate in forums, groups, to represent the agency and share

Decision making
This role has autonomy and makes decisions that are under their direct control. It refers to the Executive
decisions that require significant change to program outcomes or timeframes or are likely to escalate or require
submission to a higher level of management. This role is fully accountable for the delivery of work assignments
on time and to expectations in terms of quality, deliverables and outcomes. This role submits reports, business
cases and other forms of written advice with minimal input from the Director.
