From me, to you
If you are lucky enough to be selected
for an International camp, you may spend
a few days living in the home of a host
family.
Make a gift that would be
suitable to take to this family. It should
have some connection with the area in
which you live.
Sing your heart out!
Campfires are one of the greatest guiding
traditions.
At an international event,
everyone is expected to contribute
something from their home. Practise at
least two songs typical of the UK, until
your standard is high enough to entertain
in public. Can anyone in your Patrol
accompany you on an instrument, either
home-made or otherwise?
Also, learn at least two songs from
another country (or countries). One of
the songs should be in a foreign language.
Hint – your Guider may have books she
could lend you if you ask nicely!
One more step along the world we go…
Plan a trip to one of the four world
centres.
a. How will you get there? Check out
timetables for flights/trains etc.
b. What language will be spoken. Learn
some useful words and phrases in
the relevant language.
c. How much will it cost?
d. What will you need to pack?
e. Who do you expect to meet?
f. What will you do?
g. What currency will be used? Work
out a table of exchange rates (eg £1
= ?, £2 = ?, £3 = ? etc.)
A taste of the world
Bread, of one sort or another is eaten
almost everywhere.
Sample as many
different types of bread as you can.
Where sensible, serve them as they are
served in their country of origin. What is
your favourite? Is it possible for your
Patrol to meet at someone’s house and
have a go at making your own?
A time for action!
Unfortunately there are disasters,
natural and otherwise, around the world
on a regular basis. Usually those who
suffer most are the ordinary families. Do
something practical to help people living
through a disaster now.
Find out about some charities that work
with people in disaster areas.
(eg
UNICEF, Save the Children, Red Cross….)
Choose one, and organise an event to
raise money for them. Could you raise
peoples’ awareness of the problem at the
same time?
On the catwalk tonight….
Fashions around the world vary greatly
from country to country. Why is this?
Organise a Patrol fashion show.
Get
everyone to put together at least two
outfits from other countries. The outfits
can be National costumes, traditional
clothes or Guide uniforms. Try to include
as many different parts of the world as
you can.
This great game of Guiding
Baden-Powel called it a game – a game to
be played by everyone regardless of race,
colour or religion.
Find out as much as you can about World
Guiding.
Devise a game suitable for
either Rainbows or Brownies to play, so
they can learn something of what it’s all
about.
The things we do
Try your hand at a craft traditional in
another country. For instance:





Origami
Make a Pinata
Diwali lamps
Tie-dying (with natural dyes)
Or anything else you can persuade a
guider to approve!
The way we live
Many of the world’s major cities have
shanty towns alongside them. The houses
there are made out of whatever the
people can find. As a Patrol build a house
typical of a shanty town.
You will need:







Wooden poles
Rope
Cardboard
Old doors
Stones
Old blankets
Anything else you can think of!
Could you sleep in it? Would it be safe?
How would you feel if you had to live in
this kind of house all the time?
Surfing USA… and anywhere else!
In web addresses the ‘www’ stands for
world-wide web. Challenge each member
of the Patrol to go surfing and visit a few
Guide sites from other countries. Each
person is to find instructions for a game
or activity you then try as a Patrol.
If you find any good ideas for the unit
make sure you pass them on to your
Guider!
Hint – you could start with the CHQ site
at http://www.guides.org.uk and jump
from there.
