Nursery Curriculum Information – Summer 1st Half 2017
Communication, Language & Literacy
- Introduce new words such as seed,
seedling, shots, root, & leaves.
- Phonic Rhymes: Talk about words that
rhyme with healthy foods e.g. pear,
bear & share.
- Use list of topic words to help children
make up funny rhymes or nonsense
poems.
- Children to make a selection of
sandwiches with healthy fillings for a
picnic or party.
- Talk about different gardens, focusing
on what we see, touch and smell.
Mathematical Development
- Group and sort various growing things
into groups of one, two or three
objects.
- Make outdoor number line using fruit/
vegetable & flower pictures.
- Sort sets of growing things according
to number of legs/
wings/petals/leaves.
- Match ladybird set using dots up to
ten.
- Go on mini-beast hunt in the Ecogarden and the playground- using
words such as behind, under, inside,
outside, left, right, on top etc…
- Sing an adapted version of the rhyme,
’10 green bottles’, for example, ‘10 red
apples hanging on a tree’.
- Compare different heights of plants
whilst growing (link to story Titch).
- Talk about different sized watering
cans, thinking about which will hold the
most water.
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
- Study seeds with a microscope before
planting them.
- Take turns talking about their trips
and weekends.
- Begin playing simple card games (snap
and picture lotto).
- Make a healthy meal together,
encourage children to take turns,
share fairly and listen carefully to
instructions.
- Talk about the need for healthy eating
routines; washing hands before eating,
eating regularly, avoiding too much
sugary snacks, drinking plenty of water
and brushing teeth after eating.
Physical Development
- Children are to develop some fruit and
vegetable themed exercises, e.g.
bending like a banana, stretching tall
and thin like a string bean, spreading
arms and feet wide like a star fruit,
popping like a pea from a pod etc….
- Explore using a range of gardening
tools.
- Paint/ draw/ print using a variety of
mark- making tools, including printing
with fruit.
- Create 3D models of different-shaped
fruit and veg. Paint the models for
role-play fruit & Veg stall).
Knowledge & understanding of the World
- Plant a variety of different seeds,
vegetables and flowers.
- Investigate the features of living
things using binoculars and magnifying
glasses.
- Compare the inside and outside of
fruit and vegetables.
- Care for our vegetable garden.
Creative Development
- Draw circles and lines on mirrors to
create a self-portrait.
- Use handprint to represent a flower.
- Use musical instruments for making up
songs.
- Make box gardens using collage and
junk modeling.
- Role-play area as a garden centre
(outdoors).
- Role play area as fruit and veg stall
(indoors).
- Encourage children to make colorful
collaged pictures of their favorite
fruit and vegetables.
- Make own instruments for an outdoor
sound garden.
- Use listening station to listen to bird
sounds.
- Learn lots of news songs related to
gardening and growing.

Dear Parents,
Our topic this term is –Gardening and Growth. This term will include learning about caring for a
garden, how plants grow, and how people grow. The children are learning more and more sounds
during phonics, to help them develop their phonic knowledge please continue to read your home book
every-week.
To help your child do their very best at school, please ensure that he/she:
 Attends school ON TIME, EVERY DAY
 Actively participates in all school activities.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Home School Communication: I will be at the Nursery door before/after school on most days, if you
need any information, or have any worries or concerns please feel free to talk to me. For a more formal
meeting, please telephone the office or send a note via your child.
Attendance and Punctuality: We have high expectations for attendance and punctuality. Make sure
that your child comes to school ON TIME, EVERY DAY! DO NOT TAKE HOLIDAYS DURING TERM
TIME! If you do not send your child to school on time, every day, THEY WILL MISS VALUABLE
LEARNING TIME THAT CAN NOT BE REPLACED!
Behavior: We have high expectations for work and behavior; therefore it is essential that you give your
child a daily reminder about the importance of: excellent behavior and listening, honesty, treating others
and property with respect, working hard and always doing their best.
