CSR Project
Objective
PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT
To manage activities and resources effectively whilst
reducing carbon footprint
EDUCATION & AWARENESS
Initiate activities with participation of society and create
positive impact on environment. To educate community and
future generations on the importance of environmental
conservation.
Introduction
What is Waste Management?
-The Collection, transport, processing, recycling,
monitoring and disposal of waste materials responsibly.
What is Waste?
- The term usually relates to materials produced by
human activity
- Waste are produced in various forms which include solids, liquids,
gaseous or radioactive substances.
Waste
How much rubbish do we produce?
In 2008, Malaysian’s produced an estimated 20,000
tones of solid waste daily.
• This figure is expected to reach 30,000 tones per
day by 2020.
• 9th Malaysia Plan estimated about 45% of the
waste is made up of food waste, 24% of plastic,
7% is paper, 6% of iron and glass and others
made of the rest
Disposal Methods (1)
Landfills - Disposing of waste in a landfill
involves burying waste, and this remains a
common practice in most countries.
• It creates a number of adverse environmental
impacts such as wind-blown litter, attraction of
vermin, and generation of liquid leachate.
Disposal Methods (2)
Incineration - A disposal method that involves
combustion of waste material. It is used to dispose of
solid, liquid and gaseous waste. Incineration is
common in countries where land is more scarce.
* It pollutes the air and may release toxic substances.

Effect of Landfill
Our Planet is Sick
Earth is suffering from
multiple symptoms !
-Poisoning of the atmosphere, land
and seas
-Destruction and decline of natural
eco-systems will not cope with
pollutants produced
-Unpredictable weather conditions
-Extinction of species…
Global Warming
Deforestation has reduced
earth's capacity to absorb
carbon dioxide and global
warming has taken its toll.

Waste Management Initiatives
•Recycling soap bars from the guest rooms
•Re-use plastic bottles whenever possible
•Printing is highly discouraged unless absolutely
necessary.
•Replacing bottled water with water
dispensers for meetings and events
thus reducing 43,200 plastic bottles
per year.
•SGHKL associates are given a Hijau
Way Canvas to discourage use of
plastic bags.
•Changing of plastic laundry bag to
non-woven bag.
•Separating of glass, paper, aluminum cans and plastic
for collection by relevant parties.
Funds received from this exercise are channeled to the
sports and welfare funds.
•
Proper waste management in commercial businesses
•Conscientious management of commercial oil and
grease (eg installing grease traps and bacteria
treatment)
•Segregation of waste (wet waste, solid waste,
recyclables)
Benefits of Waste Management as a
CSR Initiative
• Environmental conservation
• Improve safety and environmental
health of local residents/community
• Maintain sustainable development
• Reduce cost
• Increase staff motivation and
community relationship
• Education
Benefits of Waste Management as a
CSR Initiative
Environmental conservation
• Reduce landfills
• Create organic by products that are
utilized as fertilizers or feed
Benefits of Waste Management
as a CSR Initiative
Improve safety and environmental health of
local residents/community
• Less pollution and chemicals in ground water due
to leachate from landfills and direct disposal of
grease/oil into drainage
• Reduce occurrence of flooding
• Improve image and value of property
• Reduce infestation of pests and mosquitoes which
carry life threatening diseases
Benefits of Waste Management
as a CSR Initiative
Sustainable development
• Conservation of local environment
creates opportunity for future
developments without creating
negative impact on environment
• Recycling and buying back
recycled products will create a
green industry
Benefits of Waste Management
as a CSR Initiative
Reduce cost
• More capital available for
community/environmental projects
• Support environmental initiatives (e.g. tree
planting projects, mangrove conservation)
• Employees benefit from green programs
(e.g participate in wildlife/forest conservation and
visit charitable projects)
Benefits of Waste Management
as a CSR Initiative
Increase staff motivation and improve
community relationship
• Help the staff build morale and teamwork with
Green programs
• Foster positive proactive involvement and
communication through activities with local
communities
Benefits of Waste Management
as a CSR Initiative
Education
• Improve community knowledge of the importance
of environmental conservation
• Educational site visits by Schools to
recycling/composting facilities help foster better
understanding and nurtures Green Culture to
future generations
