Direct Democracy P2P Tutorial Patrick Hagerty Scott Fuller Step 1. Download the latest release of the software from http://directdemocracyp2p.net/releases/ . (Java 1.7 is required) (sqlite3 is required for Linux and Mac) Step 2. Right click and extract the package. Step 3. Double click the dd_p2p.bat(Windows) or dd_p2p.sh(Linux/Mac) to start the program. Step 4. A window should pop up and allow you to create your peer information. Input your name and email address. You can add a personal slogan as well. Then click “Create”. Step 6. To be able to participate in the program you will need to add some directory servers to your program. Do this by going to the DDP2P website and drag and drop the directory servers onto the application to automatically get the server information. Step 7. Save your personal peer address into an envelope image. By clicking on the “Control Panel” tab and then “Peers data”. From there click the “Save Address” button and save a file ending with the .bmp or .gif file extension. Step 8. Distribute this envelope to your peers or post to on your personal site. This will allow your friends and peers to associate with you. Step 9. To load similar envelopes of your peers and friend simply drag and drop their envelopes into your running application for them to be automatically updated to your program. Step 10. Now you are ready to create or join organizations by going to the “Organizations” tab and right clicking in the white space. Then click the “Add” button to start an organization. Step 11. Fill out the organization information at the bottom of the screen in the input fields. The default choices for an organization are “Yes”, “No” and “Abstrain” when a voter is presented with a motion, petition, or initiative. You can make your own choices by clicking on the “Default Choices” box and adding in your custom choices one at a time followed by the “Enter” key. Make sure to clear the input box after every entering of a new choice! You can also delete choices by extending the input box with the down arrow button and clicking the red X next to each choice. Step 12. Once you have created your organization you will want to register as a constituent. First select the organization you would like to be a constituent of. Then click on the “Constituents” tab and right clicking in the white space and choosing “Add Myself”. Step 13. You can now start deliberating by navigating to the “Motions” tab and right clicking in the white space and then clicking the “Add” button to add a new motion.
