Overview
The MuVo Mix is a small, portable audio playback unit that fits easily in
the palm of the hand. It is about three inches long, one and a half
inches wide and 3/4 of an inch thick and weighs just over one ounce.
The MuVo Mix plays back digital audio material in several formats
including MP3, items from audible.com (formats 2 and 3), and protected
wma (Windows Media Audio) formatted files. Books from Unabridged
and NetLibrary are in the protected wma format.
The MuVo Mix does not have a speaker, so you must have either a set
of ear buds, headphones, or an external speaker plugged into the audio
jack in order to hear anything.
The Controls
Orient the MuVo Mix so that the longer side with buttons on it is toward
you and the earphone jack is on the right end. Also on the right end is a
protruding metal ring. This is used to attach the device to a lanyard or
carrying strap. The other end of the device is smooth and slightly
rounded. There are a total of six buttons on this model of the MuVo.
Three are located on the top and three are located on the front.
From left to right, the buttons on the top of the device are "back,"
"forward," and "on/off". To begin listening, press and hold down the
"on/off" button for about five seconds. If there is any content on the
device, it will automatically start playing. To pause, press the same
button briefly, to resume playing press it briefly again, and to stop play
altogether and turn the device off, press and hold the same button again
for five seconds. (If neglected for a few minutes while on pause, the
MuVo Mix will power itself off.) Each time the device is turned off, it
remembers the point at which it was stopped and will start playing again
at the same place.
To the left of the "on/off" button is the "forward" button and to the left of
that is the "back" button. Press and release the "back" or "forward"
buttons quickly to move from one audio file to another. For Overdrive
books from Unabridged, books are divided into multiple files, called
"parts". Each part is about one hour long. To move forward or back
among the parts, quickly press and release the "back" or "forward"
button to move among the parts of a book. Note: when you move
among audio files on the MuVo Mix, each file will always begin playing
at its beginning. If you were reading at some point within a file or within
the book, your place will be lost.
Pressing and holding either the "back" or "forward" buttons for at least
one second moves you backward or forward within the file you are
currently listening to at that moment. Snippets or chatter from the audio
of your book can be heard as you move through the file. The rate of
moving forward or backward increases the longer you hold either the
"back" or "forward" button down.
Located between the "on/off" button and the "back" and "forward"
buttons is a small LED display. When the MuVo Mix is playing, the LED
is green. When the device is on pause, the LED is red. If the LED on
the device blinks red, the battery power is low. When in mix mode, the
LED slowly blinks green. Sometimes, when the battery is low, the unit
will just stop. Change the AAA battery. You may also need to relocate
where you were reading as often the MuVo will jump back to a previous
stop location.
From left to right, the buttons on the front of the device are "volume
down," "volume up," and “mix.” The volume buttons are long,
rectangular buttons with almost no space between them. To the right of
the volume buttons is the small, round "mix" button. To shuffle the order
of playback, press and hold the "mix" button for one second. To resume
normal playing order, press and hold the "mix" button again for one
second. The "mix" button is intended for shuffling music playback and
has little practical value when playing audio books.
The Battery
The MuVo Mix operates on one AAA battery which will last up to 12
hours. To replace the battery, first make sure the unit is turned off.
Next, on the bottom of the device near the back edge, locate a line of
three small bumps of varying size. This is one end of the battery
compartment door. With your finger on the three bumps, press the door
of the battery compartment to the right (that is, toward the side of the
device containing the headphone jack). Remove the depleted battery
and insert the fresh battery so that the flat (negative) end touches the
spring end of the battery compartment. To replace the battery
compartment door, slide the edge with two prongs of varying lengths in
first.
Transferring Audio Books
As small as it is, the MuVo Mix has two distinct parts, the USB flash
drive that holds the audio files (smaller part) and the battery and case
(larger part). To separate the parts, locate the grid of bumps on the top
and bottom of the device near the headphone jack, grasp the MuVo Mix
with thumb and forefinger at this point, hold the case near the left end
with the other hand and pull the USB flash drive out of the case. The
USB connector is located at one end of the flash drive.
To transfer audio books, first plug the USB connector into a USB port on
your computer. Detailed instructions for downloading and transferring
Unabridged Project books are available in large print, braille or via email attachment upon request from the Perkins Library.
Special note for those using Windows Media Player 10: Follow the
instructions from the Unabridged web site for transferring a book. After
you have done this one time successfully, Windows Media Player
version 10 will know where your device is located.
Some easy keyboard commands to transfer Unabridged files are:
Following the successful download of a book from the Unabridged
website, press Control T to begin the Transfer process to your MuVo –
this will launch Windows Media Player, and you will need to press Enter
to finish the launch of this application. You will then hear the book start
to play aloud. This means things are working well for you. You can then
go ahead and stop the reading by pressing Control S. Be sure your
MuVo is plugged into a USB port for the next part of the process.
Press Alt V to go to the View menu, then press G for Go To, L for
Library, then Alt Y to start the transfer.
It usually takes about 5 minutes for all the files to transfer over to the
MuVo.
If you don't use Windows Media Player to transfer files to any other
device, there is another quick way to transfer files. With Windows
Explorer, navigate to the directory where your book files are located.
Highlight the wma files that you want to transfer. Right-click and select
"Send To" from the context menu.
From the "send To" menu, select "add to sync list". This will launch
Windows Media Player. When Windows Media Player is open, press
"Alt-Y" to start the synchronization. Near the bottom of the screen, there
is a control that, during the transfer, will display "stop sync". When it
changes to "start sync", your transfer is completed.
When you are finished transferring, remove the USB flash drive from the
computer, snap the MuVo Mix's parts back together, and you're ready to
go.
