Australian Native Plants Society Canberra Region

Buying Australian plants
The suppliers listed offer a good choice of
Australian native plants for both the beginner
gardener and those wishing to try more demanding
or specialist plants.
The Society sells small plants because experience
shows that a small healthy plant will often outstrip
an expensive advanced plant bought to give instant
effect. For proper root development it is critical
that plants be in the right sized pot and that the pot
has internal vertical ridges to train the roots to
grow downwards. If the roots are restricted by the
pot or grow incorrectly they will be deformed and
the plant will be short lived. This is a particular
risk for advanced plants.
In addition to our twice yearly sales, plants are also
often available for low prices at our regular
monthly meetings, held on the second Thursday of
each month except January, at Theatrette,
Australian National Botanic Gardens, Clunies Ross
St, Acton. Plants are sold from 7.40 pm, before the
meeting starts at 8 pm, and after the meeting.
The small nurseries detailed on this brochure sell
locally grown plants. Always phone first because
many operate on a part-time basis. Several large
nurseries which stock Australian plants in addition
to exotic plants are also listed.
An indispensable reference for those growing
Australian native plants in cold climates is our own
book "Australian Native Plants for Canberra
Region Gardens" available at bookshops, garden
centres and at our meetings.
