Maine SILC Attends Maine Emergency Preparedness Conference
The Maine Statewide Independent Living Council is dedicated to
ensuring that citizens with disabilities have control over their lives
and environments with equal access to options, opportunities, and
choices as do all citizens. Maine SILC represents the entire state of
Maine and has mandated focus areas that include Employment,
Housing, Transportation, Assisted Technology, Youth Transition,
Economic Self-Sufficiency and Community Based Living (which
includes and Emergency Preparedness). Each focus area is clearly an
important aspect for Maine people with disabilities seeking to
become more independent.
Maine SILC staff and council members recently attended the 2017
Maine Prepares – Emergency Preparedness Conference at the Augusta
Civic Center. The conference theme was entitled “Threats to People
and Infrastructure.” The two-day event was well done and offered
many presentations that all people, to include Maine people with
disabilities, should find interesting and educational. Studies indicate
that 60% or more of all Americans are not prepared for an emergency
situation. This conference offered speakers and vendors who would
be helpful on the journey to prepare for such a time.
Maine SILC seeks to educate and advocate for Maine people on issues
of importance to independent living. Our website has been updated
during the conference and will continue to update as to resources that
would help all Maine people and those who are disabled to be more
prepared for emergency situations. Maine SILC’s website is
