Who We Are: HOPE House provides tangible, compassionate assistance and care to
those in the Guelph community through immediate relief and ongoing support, with the goal of
moving people toward a greater level of independence. We operate and advocate on the
belief that poverty, food insecurity, inequality, health and community are all interconnected.
We offer services and programs that challenge the stigmas surrounding poverty and allow our
clients to maintain their dignity and choice, while simultaneously providing them with tactile
skills developed in a community environment; it is not about a hand-out but rather offering
people a hand-up, creating long-term skills that facilitate self-sufficiency.

Description: The Food Market Manager will oversee the operations of the HOPE House
Food Market—a choice-based, points-based food market that is accessed by more than 400
families each month.
This individual will be relationally oriented, will enjoy working with people from a variety of backgrounds
and will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to write procedure, reports,
and letters of support will be required, as well as the ability to communicate the mission and vision of
HOPE House to various audiences. The individual will also be task-oriented, able to complete a variety
of duties on a deadline and move between tasks smoothly. The Food Market is a busy program and
requires an individual who is not easily flustered by a changing schedule or difficult personalities. This
is a pivotal role to HOPE House’s operations and requires a person who is highly organized with the
ability to step into operational challenges as they arise.
Please know, this is a physically demanding role and will require someone who is able to lift and move
heavy loads of food and other goods.
Responsibilities:
 Managing the overall operations of the HOPE House Food Market; this includes food
procurement, training and managing volunteers, writing operational procedures, managing
inventory and reporting the weekly and monthly activity of the Food Market.
 Writing reports, policy notices, and program updates.
 Overseeing the Harvest of HOPE program (seasonal): this includes helping recruit volunteers,
helping arrange transport, doing some field work, transporting food back into HOPE House
and sharing it with other services providers.
 Overseeing and organizing all (3) community food drives throughout the year.
 Helping to oversee the Christmas Hamper program.
 Managing the client database and implementing changes to said database.
 Acting as a liaison to other service providers and like-minded agencies to work on community
initiatives together and to share resources.
 Reaching out and developing relationships with businesses, individuals and community service
providers who would partner with HOPE House.
 Sit, and act as ambassador for HOPE House, on various community committees that are
working with service providers in the realm of food security and poverty.
 Additional duties as required (some flexibility in schedule and the ability to work some evenings
and weekends will be necessary). Please note that every staff person is expected to help out
and to attend HOPE House’s large, annual fundraising events.
Qualifications:
 Completion of secondary school education. Completion of post-secondary education would be
an asset.
 Excellent communications skills—both written and verbal.
 The ability to make “cold calls” to businesses and service providers when needed.
 Proficiency with Microsoft Office (or similar software).
 Database experience is an asset.
 Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle to pick up/deliver food as needed.
 The ability to lift and transport materials is crucial.
 Highly developed organizational and operational skills.
 The ability to work with a variety of individuals, employing tact when dealing with different
constituencies. Must be able to demonstrate a compassionate and non-judgmental attitude
with the clients that HOPE House serves.
 The ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
 The ability to develop and maintain positive, effective working relationships with fellow staff
members, volunteers, board members, clients and community members.
 The ability to multi-task and work on a variety of projects at one time even when the projects
are not related to one another.
 An innovative spirit and the ability to take initiative.
 Experience with managing projects—seeing a project from its inception.
