There is no stroke treatment service available in Portland that we don’t offer here. Sacred Heart treated 630 stroke cases in Fiscal Year 2011, more than any other hospital in the state, including Oregon Health & Science University (612) and the two largest Legacy hospitals in Portland: Legacy Meridian (243) and Legacy Emanuel (244). Our annual stroke patient volumes are higher than Providence Portland and Kaiser Sunnyside. Advanced Primary Stroke Center The Joint Commission has designated PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. This designation was earned by meeting rigorous quality standards and passing comprehensive evaluations of numerous stroke treatment performance measures. Hospitals that receive this award have reached an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care as outlined by the AHA/ASA for 24 consecutive months. Diagnosis: CT performed within five minutes of arrival revealed occluded left middle cerebral artery (Image A). Neuro intensivistneurohospitalist Elaine Skalabrin, MD, consulted via telemedicine from PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. The team decided to administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to dissolve the clot. Patient was transported to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart at RiverBend. ■ ■ ■ Treatment: A perfusion CT scan was performed upon arrival. The green area in Image B shows the ischemic penumbra; the red area is infarct core. The PeaceHealth Sacred Heart team successfully removed the clot and restored blood flow using the Penumbra System.
