Stroke Center
Time Lost Is Brain Lost
The Advanced Primary Stroke Center at PeaceHealth Sacred
Heart Medical Center offers the full spectrum of treatment for
stroke patients, right here in our region. There is no stroke
treatment service available in Portland that we don’t offer
here. Sacred Heart treated 630 stroke cases in Fiscal Year
2011, more than any other hospital in the state, including
Oregon Health & Science University (612) and the two largest
Legacy hospitals in Portland: Legacy Meridian (243) and
Legacy Emanuel (244). Our annual stroke patient volumes
are higher than Providence Portland and Kaiser Sunnyside.
And our stroke team has the training, expertise and technology to handle the highest-acuity cases, close to home.

STROKE CASE STUDY
Treatment of Occluded Cerebral Artery
■
Subject: A 71-year-old man with stroke symptoms arrived at Peace
Harbor Hospital in Florence by ambulance.
Diagnosis: CT performed within five minutes of arrival revealed
occluded left middle cerebral artery (Image A). Neuro intensivistneurohospitalist Elaine Skalabrin, MD, consulted via telemedicine
from PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. The
team decided to administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) to
dissolve the clot. Patient was transported to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart
at RiverBend.
■
■
■
Treatment: A perfusion CT scan was performed upon arrival. The
green area in Image B shows the ischemic penumbra; the red area
is infarct core. The PeaceHealth Sacred Heart team successfully
removed the clot and restored blood flow using the Penumbra System.
A post-procedure CT scan (Image C) shows a much smaller final area
of stroke.
■
■
Outcome: After transfer to the CARF-accredited Oregon
Rehabilitation Center, the patient was walking independently,
speaking normally and had only minimal fine coordination problems.
