Tennis Championships – Teams Event 2017
Dates:
Friday 3rd - Sunday 5th March 2017 (Contingency day, Monday 6th)
Grades:
Boys (4 + 1 reserve), Girls (4 + 1 reserve) & Mixed (2 boys + 2 girls & 2
reserves)
Venue:
South Canterbury TENNIS CENTRE, TIMARU (Benvenue Avenue)
Cost:
$250 incl GST per team for each Grade (Boys, Girls & Mixed Teams).
Entry Fee will be invoiced to the school post the tournament.

Competing Schools: Break down for each grade is 1 team from Tasman, 2 teams from
Canterbury, 1 from Aoraki, 1 from Otago and 1 from Southland. If these
regions do not take up their places Aoraki as host has the right to fill any
spots or then invite teams from the other regions.
Team Composition: Each Boys & Girls team will consist of up to FIVE (5) players. Mixed
teams may consist of up to THREE (3) players of each gender BUT must
be from schools that are co-educational.
All competitors must be from Year 9 onwards and aged 19yrs or
under as at 1 January 2017. Players must also fit the criteria in the
student eligibility section of the NZ Secondary School Sports Council
Rules.
Event Format:
Subject to number of entries in each grade.
A contest between two schools shall consist of four singles matches
followed by two doubles matches.
Order of play consists of:
1) Boys / Girls grade player no. 3 & 4 singles matches OR mixed grade
no. 2 singles
2) Boys / Girls player no. 1 & 2 singles matches OR mixed no. 1 singles
3) Doubles Matches – please note for Mixed grade there will be no mixed
gender doubles i.e. only Boys Doubles & Girls Doubles.
All singles shall be the best of three sets with a twelve-point tie-break (first
to 7 points winning by 2) being played at six games all in each set. All
doubles matches shall be the best of two sets, super tiebreak for third set
and the ITF no-ad system of scoring will be in effect for all doubles
matches.
Playing Order:
Tennis NZ National CONFIGURE RANKING bands are to be used to
determine playing order of teams (i.e. S5 players have to play higher than
S6 players). If you have two players with the same band e.g. two S5
players, the manager can play them in their order of preference.

Raking is to be taking as at 21st February 2017.
Singles players must play in ranked order – i.e. Number 1 must play
Number 1, etc. The #1 ranked player must always play the top doubles.
Points Awarded:
Matches won within contest are awarded 1 point
Schools winning the overall contest are awarded 2 bonus points
Winner Criteria:
The winner of the contest shall be:
1) Winner of the majority of matches (e.g. 4-2 will win 8—2)
2) If matches are tied (3-3), the winner of the majority of sets (e.g.7 sets
to 6 will win 5 -3).
3) If matches and sets are tied, the winner of the majority of games
prevails. (e.g. 56-54)
4) If matches, sets and games are tied, the contest is a draw. If this
occurs in playoffs/ finals one doubles tie-break will be played with the
winner of the tie-break being the winner of the team tie. (Teams may
choose any combination of players for this tie-break)
Presentations:
Presentations will be held at the conclusion of ties on Sunday 5th March at
the venue. Medals & certificates will be presented to the winners with
certificates to the second & third place getters. It is hoped to present ALL
certificates at the presentation.
National Teams Finalists: The top two placed schools in each grade (Boys, Girls & Mixed)
must commit to attending the National Teams’ Finals. 27th – 30th March
2017 in Auckland.
Managers Meeting: A managers meeting will be held at the South Canterbury Tennis Centre
at 8.30am on Friday 3rd March.
