Scott Johnson plays the slots aboard the Jacks or Better Casino boat.
Channel 4's Scott Johnson spent the day on the Jacks or Better casino boat hoping to find both dealers and players
who would tell us what to do to increase the odds of winning.
Leaving the dock at Mayport and traveled three miles out into federal waters, the Las Vegas-style gambling began.
Craps dealers told Johnson they see a lot of similar superstition, like players shaking the dice and snapping the
fingers hoping that will bring a big win. Slot players also have their tricks.
One woman said she puts her hand on the machine and keeps it there in the hopes the machine will stay hot and
make her a winner.
Others had different stragegies.
"There's a tip I learned from Vegas," said Star Goldner. "Put $5 in it, maybe hit minimum, not maximum, and if you
win off $5, then you know you can put your $20 in because it's a good machine. If it loses your $5, get off of it, go to
another machine."

If you prefer video poker machines, one player says the thing she learned in Vegas is to pick a machine on the end
because you want to play a machine on the end because end machines get a lot of play.
Johnson had $20 to spend while doing this story and he picked Blackjack. Before sitting down to play, he got this
advice from veteran Blackjack player Thomas McLaughlin:
"Play consistent when it comes to Blackjack. If you don't hit on 15s, don't ever hit on 15s. If you always hit on 15s,
always hit on 15s."
Johnson did just that and was doing OK until he wavered from that advice and his money slipped away.
If you take some time online you can find other secrets to gambling. These apply to picking the best slot machines
in general, not specifically about the ones at Jacks or Better, just slot machines in general.
According to gambling.jaxworld.com you should find a machine near a change booth. It says casinos want people
waiting in line for change to hear the sounds of someone winning, to hopefully motivate them to get more change
and play more machines. It suggests also trying slots near cafes and snack bars adding that asinos frequently
place their best machines there to motivate players to eat quickly and get back to playing and back to putting
money in the machines.
Jaxworld.com also says to try slot aisles known as crosswalks. Crosswalks are areas players must walk through to
get to other slot aisles. The site says casinos want those passing through to see and hear people winning so they'll
stop and play too.
In researching this story, Johnson also found tipsforwinning.com, which has detailed methods if your trying to
consistently win at gambling. It covers most games and involves a lot of numbers and betting strategies. But in
talking to casino workers, they say they have yet to see a system that guarantees you'll always win at a game of
chance.
