I am a physiological ecologist who focuses on understanding the evolution of functional traits in plants and the
impacts of climate change on ecosystems. I investigate physiological or plant-mediated processes from the spatial
scale of cells to that of whole landscapes. I have recently focused on understanding the dynamics of climateecosystem interactions and their influence in coupling of carbon and water cycles in arid landscapes, which
encompass ~ 40% of Earth’s surface. I am also interested in understanding how important traits of individual species
are combined in real communities in ways that lead to patterns of stability or invasibility, with implications for
biodiversity and ecological conservation. I am interested in the plant processes underlying these phenomena and how
pattern and mechanism are related to processes in diverse biomes from around the globe.

leadership council in the Borrego Springs region, focused on aligning the many different for-profit,
non-profit, and not-for-profit organizations, in addition to government groups, with the goal of
collectively tackling important societal and environmental challenges in the region.
(2) Center for Environmental Biology Research Internship Program (www.uciceb.com/studentinternship-program/) – I oversee this program, focused on engaging undergraduate students in
ecology, evolution, environmental science, and earth science in research activities taking place on the
open space in Orange County, in collaboration with local land management agencies and non-profits.
The aim is to develop professional skills and connect students with potential employers.
(3) Center for Environmental Biology Education and Outreach Internship Program
(www.uciceb.com/student-internship-program/) – I oversee a program that focuses on integrating
research, undergraduate training and dissemination of research results to K-12 students and the public
in a number of formal and informal science settings. The program has initially begun through a
collaboration with the school of education and the Crystal Cove Alliance, with the goal of developing
a connection with CalTeach and serving as a gateway program to potential teacher training degree
programs or a certificate in informal science education.
(4) Arizona Center for STEM Teachers (www.az-stem-teachers.org) – I co-directed this teacher-driven
program aimed at linking the University resources with K-12 STEM teachers from throughout the
State of Arizona to impact retention. During my time in Arizona we had more than 537 teachers
attend short-course and multiple-week workshops, impacting more than 57,000 K-12 students.
(5) B2 Science and Society Fellows (www.b2science.org/earth/outreach/society.html) – I established
this leadership program for graduate students in order to develop communication capacity within our
next generation of scientists. This competitive program compliments existing graduate programs and
supports between 5 and 8 students per year in developing the outreach and engagement skills required
of modern scientists.

(6) B2 Creative Writing Internship (www.b2science.org/institute/program/write.html) – This
competitive program engages the creative writing program at the University of Arizona in order to
support an integration of arts and sciences and highlight the many ways that academics contribute to a
better understanding of our world.
(7) B2 Artist in Residence Program (www.b2science.org/institute/program/artist.html) – At the
Biosphere 2 we supported artists in their scholarship in order to expand in our tools of connecting
with the public. This competitive program has resulted in impacts on both sides of the creative
disciplines – our scientists have profited from the interactions, while the artists have been inspired in
the experience.

coordination of a public engagement program connecting faculty in the UA College of Science in
informal settings for ‘conversations’ on topics of interest to the broad community.
(9) Discovery “Science” Programs (http://cierzo.sahra.arizona.edu/connections/) – I developed a
sustainable model for a service learning supported K-12 experience in science on the University
campus. Recruiting faculty from a number of departments, we trained undergraduates in the
pedagogy required to expose elementary and middle school students to topics across the college
(Marine Biology Discovery, Physics Discovery, Desert Discovery, etc.), we couple these programs
with our Planetarium shows and floor exhibits at the Science Center and provide assessment tools that
facilitate fundraising and strategic planning.
(10) Research Experience for Undergraduates (www.b2science.org/earth/outreach/reu.html) – we ran a
summer experience for ten undergraduate students per year to live and work at the Biosphere 2 for ten
weeks each summer. This program drew students from a range of primarily undergraduate
institutions and traditionally under-represented groups in order to provide research experiences in the
Earth Sciences and eventually competed successfully for an NSF-REU Site Program Proposal
(submitted by a post-doc and a junior staff scientist in my program).

across three outreach sites that impacts more than 150,000 individuals per year. This includes public
