Sports Ambassadors Programme INFORMATION PACK The LSE Sports Ambassador Programme recognises and rewards exceptional sporting talent and sportsmanship amongst our students. It supports and develops students who are highlevel athletes in any recognised sport to pursue their chosen sporting career and develop sport leadership skills. By becoming an LSE Sports Ambassador you will be representing the LSE sporting community on campus and beyond. Programme Criteria For 2015/16, the Programme will include three tiers of Ambassador to represent a wider variety of high-level sport at LSE. Gold and Silver Ambassadors will typically be representing a country at international level or be involved in a national development squad / trialling process. A grant given by the LSE Annual Fund will also help successful applicants with training, equipment, travel and tournament registration costs. Bronze Ambassadors will have demonstrated 1st-team success in an AU club, and be recognised as leaders within LSESU sport. Bronze Ambassadors may receive a small prize bursary in recognition of their achievements and/or funding to go towards sports leadership qualifications. All LSE students are invited to apply, and we particularly encourage applications from AU members. Factors including sporting achievement, demonstrated sporting potential, sportsmanship and leadership, international performance, and contribution to community and LSE sport will be taken into account. All Ambassadors will be expected to participate in skills development workshops, and contribute to at least one Sports Ambassadors Event on campus each year. Gold Ambassador Competed at International level at major championships Willing to act as an ambassador for sport at LSE, representing LSESU and the School on a regular basis in a sporting and/or promotional capacity Commitment to international athlete status whilst still at LSE and continue to compete at this level after LSE. Compete in BUCS if/when possible. Silver Ambassador Demonstrated achievement at the National level (e.g. BUCS Individual medallist, Regional squad member, trialling for a senior international team/development squad) 1 Sports Ambassadors Programme INFORMATION PACK Willing to act as an ambassador for sport at LSE, representing LSESU and the School on a regular basis in a sporting and/or promotional capacity Compete in BUCS if/when possible Bronze Ambassador Demonstrated achievement in university level (1st team) sport Demonstrated commitment to development of sport and community at LSE (e.g. club leadership, involvement in campaigns, community coach/official, etc.) Involvement in sporting activity outside of LSE (e.g. regional or club squad member, community coaching, NGB representative, etc.) is desirable but not essential Willing to act as an ambassador for sport at LSE, representing LSESU and the School on a regular basis in a sporting and/or promotional capacity Ambassador Benefits & Expectations All Ambassadors will contribute to bringing LSE’s sporting excellence to the fore. In order to support our Ambassadors develop talents as sportspeople and leaders, the Programme offers the following benefits: Skills & leadership development workshops (see below) Opportunities to lead talks/panel discussions at LSE Financial support for elite sport Free membership at the LSESU Gym Strength & Conditioning sessions at the LSESU Gym Subsidised physio at LSE Treatment Clinic Access to sport qualifications (i.e. coaching/officiating/instructing) and First Aid training Media exposure via LSESU and LSE channels Pastoral support and social opportunities through Ambassador Peer Buddies Academic support And more! Ambassadors will be able to utilise the support options above in the ways that suit them best individually, although every Ambassadors will be expected to attend skills & leadership development workshops and partake in at least one Sports Ambassadors Event held on campus throughout the year. We understand that the scheduling demands of elite athletes and as such the Programme offers flexibility in choosing workshops and events. Gold and Silver Ambassadors must attend at least 3 skills & leadership development workshops throughout the year, whilst Bronze Ambassadors will attend 5 workshops. Workshops will be held at LSE and specifically cover topics including but not limited to: 2 Sports Ambassadors Programme INFORMATION PACK Role Model Skills Sporting Life & Social Life Sport Nutrition Sport Psychology Sporting Achievement & Employability Challenges of Women’s Sport Widening Participation within Sport NGB Campaigns Sport Journalism Coaching & Child Protection All Ambassadors will be expected to share their new knowledge and experiences and serve as role models within the wider LSESU Sport community. This may take the form of sharing skills with your AU Club, outreaching to prospective students, or contributing to talks/panel events held on campus on topics such as balancing academic work and sports training, student life and sporting responsibility, diversity issues within elite sport, winning mentalities, etc. The larger events will be organised based on individual Ambassador strengths after recruitment is completed in October. We also ask all Ambassadors to keep LSESU up-to-date with all training plans, results, upcoming competitions, and other noteworthy news. You will be responsible for providing photos for LSESU communications and may be asked to contribute to feature news articles or interviews written by the Sports Communications Assistants. Application Process To apply to be a Sport Ambassador for 2015/16, please submit your fully completed Application Pack to Alex Reilly ([email protected]) by 15th August, 2016 Your Application Pack should include: Cover Page Completed Application Form References Form Declaration and Consent Form Applicants who are successfully shorted-listed following completion of the form will be invited to an interview to further discuss the Sports Ambassador Programme where funding and support requirements can be further analysed and any athlete questions answered. 3 Sports Ambassadors Programme INFORMATION PACK Please note the following points as you make your application to the Sports Ambassadors Programme: Be as thorough as possible in your application answers. We will pay particular attention to personal reflection of sporting experience and your potential to use your personal successes to benefit the wider LSESU Sport community. You will not need to designate a level of Ambassador when you apply. This will be discussed in your interview with the Sports Ambassadors Panel. Whilst one benefit of the Sports Ambassador Programme is financial support, keep in mind that we are looking for applicants able to commit to the development aspects of the programme. To take into the wide variety of sporting achievement inevitable over a variety of sports and levels, all criteria will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
