Wheel Loader

The Liebherr wheel loaders

in use at Sehring AG
in Langen (Hesse), Germany
Situation
Sehring AG, with its subsidiaries Sehring Beton GmbH & Co. KG
and Sehring Sand and Kies GmbH & Co. KG, is a major
company within the construction industry in the RhineMain region in Germany. The company was founded in 1927,
meaning it is able to draw on decades of valuable experience.
The process of supplying aggregates to the company’s large
concrete mixing plant in Frankfurt am Main is environmentally
friendly, with deliveries partially being made directly from the
river via a riverboat to the company-owned landing stage.
The company’s large sand and gravel plant is located in Langen
am Waldsee and it is here that high-quality sand and gravel is
extracted across an area spanning 240 ha. The good quality is
the result of a high quartz content.
The company’s motto is “In with the old and in with the
new”. For this reason, the recultivation of used spaces is an
important issue. It means that biotopes are created for plants
and animals, whilst people benefit from local recreation areas.
The recultivation process is carried out in line with strict
guidelines and high quality standards, which can be seen, in
the recultivated area of the Langener Waldsee, this is where the
swimming stage of the Frankfurt City Triathlon is held.

Task
Large quantities of fresh concrete is needed for expansions
and new builds on the Frankfurt skyline as well as for constructing bridges and average-height buildings. To produce this
concrete, various types of sand and gravel along with cement,
water and potentially even special aggregates, are required.
Sehring AG and its subsidiaries produce fresh concrete and
the large majority of the aggregates themselves. Sand and
some gravel is obtained at the company’s plant in Langen by
means of underwater extraction. The aggregates are produced
at processing plants equipped with screens, washers and
crushers, before being transported to the intended interim
storage area on conveyor belts. Large wheel loaders are used to
load the materials from these areas into lorries, which transport
them to the Frankfurt mixing plant and to external customers.
At the mixing plant, the materials produced on site are
temporarily stored with materials from external manufacturers
and supplied for the production of fresh concrete as required.
The fresh concrete produced is then transferred to concrete
mixing trucks, which deliver it to building sites in the greater
Frankfurt am Main area.
Due to the fact that the standard and quality of concrete is
of huge significance in structurally complex buildings, the
production of fresh concrete is constantly monitored and part
of every single load is subject to a quality control procedure.
Solution
Without wheel loaders, some of the afore mentioned processes
would be extremely difficult to carry out and would require
considerably more time. This is why Sehring AG uses a large
number of wheel loaders in a wide range of sizes to optimise
processes.
As new machines were required at the sand and gravel plant
as well as at the concrete plant, the company decided on an
extensive selection process. All of the well-known manufacturers
were invited to demonstrations to put the technology and fuel
consumption of the wheel loaders to the test. Following these
tests, the data was assessed and the company decided on four
Liebherr wheel loaders in total. Two L 566 wheel loaders and
two L 506 Compact wheel loaders are now in use at the sand
and gravel plant and at the large fresh concrete mixing plant.
The Liebherr wheel loaders offer a number of benefits when
completing tasks involving large equipment, including backloading and road construction, and those involving compact
machinery, such as transportation, cleaning, and loading small
collection vehicles.
The machines are equipped with permanent four-wheel drive
and an automatic limited-slip differential from 0 to 45%.
Without the operator having to do anything, the self-locking
differential ensures the machine has optimum traction and
thrust regardless of the situation, even in the case of poor soil
conditions. This allows the operator to concentrate fully on the
tasks at hand. The high proportion of glazing in the cab means
there is good all-round visibility. The rear area monitoring
camera that is integrated as standard in the large wheel loaders
increases safety.
Since there is always a chance of large amounts of dust
developing when the machines are used for extraction, the
special positioning of the radiator in the L 566 is a real benefit.
It is located directly behind the cab, which is the cleanest
part of the machine. This means that it is able to suck in air
with a low level of dust, which in turn reduces the number of
cleaning intervals required by up to eight times in comparison
to competitors’ wheel loaders, where the fans are located at the
rear of the machine.
L 566 wheel loaders are equipped with joystick steering and
a luxury air-conditioned operator’s seat. This means that
operators are able to work in a pleasant environment which
helps reduce fatigue. Since protecting the environment is a top
priority at Sehring AG, the machines have an automatic switchoff function. By automatically switching off the Liebherr engine
during relatively long downtimes, this function reduces CO2
emissions and reduces fuel consumption.
