Collect Food. Create Structures. Feed the Triangle. Harvest of NC Edition
United Way of the Greater Triangle Day of Caring
Event Regulations
Build Location:
Triangle Town Center
Build Date:
Friday, September 26, 2014
3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Strike Date:
Wednesday, October 1, 2014
8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Structures & Materials:
1. Structures must be created within the allotted space provided by the mall. No cans, materials, or part
of the structure can be outside of the perimeter of the event space. Each participating team will be
allotted one 9ft x 9ft build space in which to create their structure. The height of an individual structure
cannot exceed 6 feet at any point in the structure.
2. All structures must be created during the official build date and times of the event:
a. Friday, September 26
3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
No materials may be added to structures outside of official build hours. All cans and items used during
the event must be removed by teams during the deconstruction period.
3. Structures must be created using non-perishable food items only. These items must be collected prior
to Build Day. A preliminary count of the items used to create your structure must be submitted to
Natasha Wayne, event coordinator, by September 2, 2014. This count will be used on event signage
while structures are on display.
A final weight of all donations collected by each team will be determined by the Food Bank of Central
and Eastern North Carolina following event strike. Any food items collected but not used in the final
contest structure can be taken to be the Food Bank location at 3808 Tarheel Drive in Raleigh to be
included in a team’s final can count.
4. Structure designs should reflect the team’s interpretation of the event theme: Harvest of NC. Structure
descriptions should include why your team chose your design and any special steps taken to achieve
your overall look (i.e. choosing to create a lighthouse and soliciting only white and black labeled cans
for the design.) Please see Appendix A for theme information and possible ideas of interpretations.
5. Materials used to build structures can include:
a. Aluminum cans
b. Steel cans
c. Plastic cans (ensure that plastic cans are able to support the weight around them)
d. Boxed foods like cereals, pastas, or granola bars
e. Bagged foods like rice or beans
f.
Multi-pack food items like six pack containers of Marchan Ramen Noodle Soups
i. Note that multi-pack items should be counted as one item in can counts
6. Supporting materials to be used for leveling, balancing, or support can include:
a. Cardboard
b. Foam core (0.25” recommended)
c. Plywood
d. Plexiglass
e. Adhesive putty
f. Clear, double-sided tape
g. Hook and loop tape
h. Rubber bands
i. Fishing line
j. Wire
7. Materials used to build structures cannot include:
a. Glass containers
b. Pet food
c. Alcoholic beverages
d. Open or exposed food containers
e. Soda
f. Junk food
g. Permanent adhesives
h. 2’x4’s
i. Textual messages with derogatory or inflammatory language
j. Products with damaged or removed labels
i. Labels of each items must remain intact showing the type and expiration date of each
item.
8. All structures must be completely made of non-perishable items. Interiors of structures, whether visible
or not, must be completely filled with food items to ensure the structures’ stability. While supporting
materials can be used, these cannot be load bearing items for the safety and stability of the structure.
Some props can be used, if needed, to complete structures. For example, if a team chooses to
highlight the apple farms of Western NC by building a large apple, construction paper could be used to
create a green leaf on the apple’s stem. Try to limit the number of non-food props that are used in your
structure as judges will look more favorably on all-food structures.
9. Teams participating are responsible for obtaining their own supply of cans and non-perishable items for
use in building. Teams are encouraged to organize food drives within their organizations and
businesses in order to secure their building supplies. Targeted food drives in which specific items are
requested are an effective way to collect building supplies. For example, if a team has chosen to
highlight the apple farms of Western NC, Hunt’s canned tomatoes can be requested to generate a large
number of red labels.
a. As you consider designs for your structure, please remember we are working to fill food pantries
with healthy, nutritious food. Items such as peanut butter, soups, and canned meat are
particularly beneficial.
b. Teams are responsible for maintaining records of any donations that are made and require a tax
deduction letter. United Way of the Greater Triangle can provide an in-kind donation letter for
individuals after the event provided that the individual’s name, address, and full description of
donation are provided to United Way staff. All donation letter requests must be submitted within
10 days following the last build day.
10. Teams are responsible for transporting their items to the build site on Build Day. Teams are
responsible for removing items from the build site on Strike Day and transporting items to designated
Food Bank collection site at Triangle Town Center.
11. Build site and zone assignments will be made by event staff and emailed to teams along with a
confirmation packet shortly after the application deadline. Designated loading locations will be
specified and noted in confirmation packets for all participants.
12. All individuals participating in the event must wear closed toed footwear when building and striking their
structures. This is to ensure the safety of individuals as boxes, cans, and dollies are moved through
the building area.
Awards:
1. Three awards will be presented throughout the duration of the build event. All structures created will be
entered into judging for these awards. One winner for each award will be selected from these
categories:
a. Most Creative
b. People’s Choice
c. Most Cans
2. The “Most Creative” award will be given to the structure that utilizes food items in the most creative way
to express the overall theme of the event. The theme of the event is “Harvest of NC”. This will be
determined by consensus of the judging panel and awarded during a ceremony on Build Day.
3. The “Most Cans” award will be given to the team that collects the greatest weight of food items. Both
canned and non-perishable items will be included in the total structure count. The “Most Cans” award
will be determined after the strike of the event. Items will be weighed by Food Bank of Central &
Eastern North Carolina and winners will be notified by email. If items are collected that are not needed
in your structure, these can be dropped off at the Food Bank’s Raleigh location between 3:00 p.m.
Friday, September 26, and 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 1, to be counted in a team’s total “Most
Cans” weight.
4. Judging for the “Most Creative” award will take place on Build Day with judging beginning immediately
following build hours. The award ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26.
This award will be placed on the sign of the winning sculpture the evening of the build and be on
display throughout the event. Winner will be announced live during the event and presented their
award. Winning structure will also be featured on United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Facebook page.
5. The “People’s Choice” award will be given to the structure that receives the most votes from the public
while the structures are on display. Each structure will be assigned an identifying code during the
application process. This code will be posted on the structure’s sign through the duration of the
structure’s display time. Votes are cast by texting the structure’s code to 22333 or by entering the code
at http://PollEv.com. People’s Choice voting will be available from 6:00pm Friday, Sept. 26 to 6:00pm
Monday, Sept. 29. The “People’s Choice” award will be placed on the sign of the winning sculpture the
day following the close of voting. Winner will be notified by email and the winning structure featured on
United Way of the Greater Triangle’s Facebook page.
6. Teams are prohibited from interacting with judges during the judging process to ensure a fair and
efficient judging process.
