Shanghai, April 2017. International technology company and industry partner ContiTech is to attend
the upcoming Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2017) at the
National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) from April 21-28. ContiTech will present its
translucent and personalized surface materials, efficient and quiet fluid solutions and lightweight
mounting elements and systems at booth 4B F101 in Hall 4.2, bringing the “Smart solutions beyond
rubber” to the customers.
Acella Hylite enables light effects
The integration of digital functions in decorative surfaces for vehicle interiors is attracting more and
more customers’ attention. Light integration is a vital development step in this respect: The
translucent Acella Hylite trim material enables special lighting effects that can be used, for example,
for backlighting a vehicle door. Varying light sources can be used to create customized color effects
or to light up warning signals.
“Translucent surface materials are the key to personalizing and adding functions to soft surfaces in
vehicle interiors,” declares Jens Jünemann, head of Surface Identity within the Continental
Corporation. Light-permeable materials offer the ability to create new potentials for light designs
using various types of lighting, putting the focus on both the materials themselves and their
surroundings. When combined with different colors, structures and textures, therefore, new effects
can be designed. In addition, the color and intensity of the light sources enable effects which can be
adapted to suit particular moods. Passenger compartments can therefore be adapted to the
individual circumstances or the driving situation.
If surface materials are combined with various lighting technologies, the background lighting, for
example, can adapt to circadian rhythms, weather conditions and ambient light levels, while the
accent lighting can use light colors and intensities to generate moods. The driver’s and front seat
-2passenger’s areas and the back of the car can also be illuminated individually. In addition, different
lighting can be provided for different activities, such as driving, reading, sleeping and chilling. In this
way, the interior is adapted to the individual circumstances and the driving situation.
Hoses and lines for electric vehicles and noise-optimized fluid solutions
ContiTech is exhibiting solutions that increase the efficiency, and thus the range and durability, of
the batteries in electric vehicles. This requires a sophisticated thermal management system. The
hose and pipe systems are correspondingly complex. ContiTech already supplies solutions for the
cooling system which manufacturers can install easily and which ensure that units do not overheat,
the batteries achieve their maximum lifetime, and the occupants do not have to forgo the level of
warmth to which they have become accustomed.
ContiTech focuses also on the development of solutions that eliminate noise nuisance in the vehicle
at source. As a result of suitable internal routing of flows and the creation of resonance spaces,
ContiTech is able to apply the physical laws familiar from silencer technology to fluid-carrying lines.
Using special measurement and evaluation processes, the engineers can identify vehicle-specific
problem areas and eliminate them by means of appropriate design of the inside of the line. One
example is the modular, noise-optimized hose assembly for turbochargers. This adapts to the tight
contours in the engine compartment and withstands temperatures of up to 220°C and pressures of
up to 2.6 bar. Its modular design enables cost-optimized, yet flexible use in modern modular engines
with vehicle-specific connections.
The hose assembly is made up of an extremely flexible hose and a polyamide pipe. The hose
enables the component to cope with a great deal of movement. The use of a high-performance
polyamide allowed a weight saving of up to 15 percent over a steel pipe to be achieved. It includes
a resonator on the hot side between the turbocharger and the charge-air cooler to optimize noise
levels. It is customized for the particular vehicle and eliminates the familiar turbo whistle to such a
degree that it can no longer be heard. In addition, ContiTech has developed passive components for
noise reduction. The customer can therefore be offered the best possible assistance, depending on
the particular application.
-3Mounting elements are at the forefront of lightweight development
A major trend in the automotive industry is lightweight design. More and more components or
subcomponents made of aluminum are being replaced with glass-fiber-reinforced polyamide. They
reduce weight in the vehicle, meaning that less fuel is consumed. ContiTech is one of the industry’s
driving forces in the development of these lightweight solutions and, in 2016, the company received
several international awards for its weight-reducing components. In particular, this includes the SPE
Automotive Innovation Award, which ContiTech won in the Chassis/Hardware category. ContiTech
also received an award for the first spring strut mount in the world made from glass-fiber-reinforced
polyamide, which is designed for use in the chassis as well as the front and rear axles of passenger
cars.
ContiTech is the first component for this area of application made from glass-fiber-reinforced
polyamide. The variant is up to 30 percent lighter than die-cast aluminum versions. At the same time,
the component boasts optimum strength, effectively reduces vibrations and noise, and offers a high
level of crash protection.
Another award-winning product from ContiTech is the exceptionally lightweight NAG 3 transmission
adapter, which was specially developed for premium passenger cars. The use of glass-fiberreinforced polyamide makes the component 55 percent lighter than the aluminum version previously
used – with the same functionality. Installed in cars, the component is in the direct line of power
transmission between the transmission and the chassis. It withstands these heavy loads consistently
and reliably.
ContiTech is also working on new solutions to replace steel parts with lightweight components. At
Auto Shanghai, the company will present its development model of a carrier for the rear axle –
characterized by its lightweight materials and developed at the research and development center in
Changshu. It is about 20 percent lighter compared with a steel variant yet has a comparable material
rigidity. Simulations have confirmed the reliability of the new components. “We have therefore been
able to reach a whole new stage of development in the area of lightweight design,” says Jim Vance,
head of development at ContiTech Vibration Control in China.
