Concept Note FAO TCP/RAS/3511 Regional training workshop on Aquaculture planning and management tools Sukosol Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand, November 2016 Background It is predicted that the world demand for food fish will continue to increase significantly in the coming decades as the result of anticipated population growth and economic growth and recovery. It was projected the global demand for food fish will increase by 30 million tonnes by 2025. Sustainable growth of aquaculture is considered as the most feasible way to meet the increasing demand for food fish globally with the stagnant capture fisheries. A FAO Regional Initiative on Sustainable Intensification of Aquaculture for Blue Growth in Asia-Pacific (RI-BG) has been implemented since early 2014 to support the sustainable growth of aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region. Obviously, sustainable growth of aquaculture in Asia-Pacific is vitally dependent on improved planning and management. In order to improve the planning and management of aquaculture for sustainable development in Asia, FAO started an initiative in 2013 to develop and implement aquaculture planning and management tools tailored for Asia-Pacific region. As the continuation of the earlier work and support to RI-BG, a FAO regional TCP project to support the piloting of selected aquaculture planning and management tools in three selected ASEAN members was approved in 2015 and is being implemented currently in three participating countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. As the important activity of the Regional TCP project, regional training workshop for trainers on four aquaculture planning and management tools identified as the priority tools for piloting will be organized in Bangkok in November 2016. The four regional training workshop will cover the following aquaculture planning and management tools: 1. 2. 3. 4. Aquaculture ecological carrying capacity assessment; Aquaculture feasibility study; Aquaculture farm level biosecurity control; and Aquaculture traceability system. Objective The major objective of the regional training workshops is to enable the full understanding of the key national project staff to the selected aquaculture planning and management tools and build the capability of the key national project staff to conduct the national training for ultimate users of the tools and successfully pilot the tools according to the project requirement. Expected outputs The regional training workshops are expected to deliver the following main outputs: 1. Full comprehension of the workshop participants to the principal, framework and details of respective tools; 2. Capability to implement the national training and pilot the tools at selected sites for identified aquaculture systems and commodities following the overall project requirement; 3. Draft implementation plan for piloting selected tools in each country are prepared. Participants Regional training workshops will be participated by the project national experts who are responsible for leading and coordinating the country activities for piloting the selected tools and key national professional nominated to support the piloting of the tools in the respective countries.
