The Character of
God: Holiness
4 “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I
reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 “I have heard of You by the hearing of
the ear; But now my eye sees You;
6 Therefore I retract,
And I repent in dust and ashes.”
- Job 40:4; 42:5-6
16 I heard and my inward parts trembled,
At the sound my lips quivered.
Decay enters my bones,
And in my place I tremble.
Because I must wait quietly for the day of
distress,
For the people to arise who will invade us.
- Habakkuk 3:16
17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like
a dead man. And He placed His right
hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I
am the first and the last,
- Revelation 1:17
3 And one called out to another and
said,
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts,
The whole earth is full of His glory.”
- Isaiah 6:3
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the
Almighty, who was and who is and who
is to come.”
- Revelation 4:8b
16 because it is written, “You shall be
holy, for I am holy.”
- I Peter 1:16
God’s “holiness” has a distinct feature
1. Separation
To be holy…you have to be where God is!
-
Go to His Word
God to our knees
God to His worship
Go to His service
Go to Battle
Go preach the Word
God’s “holiness” has a distinct feature
2. Absolute Purity
“Light of Israel” Is. 10:17
“I am the Light of the world.” Jn. 8:12
“…unapproachable light” I Tim. 6:16
“children of light” Eph. 5:8
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they
shall see God.
- Mt. 5:8
Purity Requires:
• No excuses for sin
• At war with sin
Fear is a sign that one knows that
God is there, but does not know
the God who is there.
Baptism…
the first step on the journey in
the Light.
