Student Sportsmanship Pledge
At Mattson Middle School, a commitment to sportsmanship is our highest priority. All athletes at Mattson will be
expected to uphold the five core concepts in the WIAA’s “Give Me 5” program. The foundation of the program lies in the
belief that the five core concepts can help communities, schools, coaches, and athletes realize that behaviors and attitudes
learned in school activities can benefit a person for their lifetime. The program will promote and foster good character by
teaching, enforcing, advocating, and modeling the five ethical principles:
HONOR
•Always pursue victory with honor
•Demonstrate and demand integrity
•Observe and enforce the spirit and letter of rules
•Do not engage in or tolerate dishonesty or cheating
•Do not compromise education and character-development goals
SPORTSMANSHIP
•Adhere to high standards of fair play
•Treat team members fairly according to their expectations
•Never take unfair advantage
•Assure that the emotional, physical and moral well-being is always placed above desires and pressures to win
COURAGE
•Be a positive role model on and off the field
•Strive for excellence and do not fear mistakes
•Be committed to your team and to academic skills
RESPECT
•Treat the tradition of the sport and participate with respect
•Do not engage in or tolerate disrespectful conduct
•Win with grace and lose with dignity
CITIZENSHIP
•Promote sportsmanship by honoring the rules and goals of the sport
•Establish codes of conduct for coaches, athletes, parents, and spectators
•Safeguard the integrity of the sport by discouraging the abuse of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco

We Are In It For The Children
At Mattson Middle School, a commitment to sportsmanship is our highest priority. An annual pledge program has
been developed to involve parents in this commitment. All athletes at Mattson will be expected to uphold the five core
concepts in the WIAA’s “Give Me 5” program. The foundation of the program lies in the belief that the five core concepts
can help communities, schools, coaches, and athletes realize that behaviors and attitudes learned in school activities can
benefit a person for their lifetime.
“Give Me 5!” — A Program that Works

Young people need to know that integrity, fairness, and respect are lifetime values taught through athletics and
that these are the principles of good sportsmanship.
WHY DO WE NEED GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP?

To prevent violent actions toward officials, opponents, and other spectators, which are becoming commonplace
in today’s society and sports.

To decrease the emphasis on just “winning” or “losing” an athletic event.

To promote ethics, respect, and integrity in all walks of life.

To promote the ideal of intrinsic rewards of athletics.

To learn the attitudes necessary for responsible behavior.
Through the “Give Me 5!” Program, parents can make proper behavioral choices while viewing their children’s
athletic events.
PARENTS WHO PLEDGE AGREE:

We will be a proper role model for our student-athletes.

We will inform our children that we have taken the pledge and why.

We will give our children solid information about proper conduct and behavior while participating or viewing an
athletic event.

We will be clear and firm about rules concerning our conduct and behavior while viewing and participating in an
athletic event.
