Social Studies Summer Packet

Social Studies Summer Packet Grades 6-8 Current Events Project Your task this summer is to keep up with the news and choose three
current events over the duration of the summer.
Part 1: Read and Summarize
● You must choose one event that is:
○ Local news
○ National news
○ International news
● Summarize using the Google Doc that is provided to you, making sure that you provide all required
details (think 5W’s!)
○ Here is the Google Doc Template to use for your summaries
○ Make a copy of this template by going to File → Make a Copy
● This should be an OBJECTIVE summary, meaning you present only the facts, not your opinions on the
facts (see Summary Paragraph Rubric on next page)
● You must find and read at least two articles about the same event from reliable sources
● Provide the links to those articles
Part 2: Create and Present
Option 1 - Create your own primetime news network!
With this option, you will be creating three episodes of nightly news to share information about your events.
● Come up with a unique network name and make a 5 second intro/title for each episode
○ Maybe even find a little jingle that will be specific to your network?
● Each episode should be video recorded and provide a summary of the event in 3 minutes or less
● You can include relevant pictures or videos that you find
○ This will require some editing (you can do it on iMovie!)
● Feel free to get creative, provide a weather information or anything else you choose!
Option 2 - Create your own news webpage!
With this option, you will use Google Sites to create a webpage to share information about each of your events.
● Come up with a unique website name and also provide an “About Us” page to describe who you are
● Present each of your events in whatever style you’d like (ex. blog, summary, opinion, etc.)
● Provide accompanying information that will be helpful for your readers, such as images, videos, maps
○ Just make sure that you provide sources for everything you pull from the web (this can be
included in a separate references page on your website)
