A key component of this approach means taking a fresh look at historic options, investigating new options, and considering the alternatives and benefits alongside our stakeholders and communities. Your input is important Over 800 people attended and the challenges of the state highway were discussed. A great amount of feedback was received on the community’s concerns and desires. Since the July open days, workshops and meetings have been held with key stakeholders such as the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, iwi partners, freight groups, emergency services and the Avocado and Kiwifruit industry to look at the possible solutions for SH2. Using community and stakeholder feedback a short list of options have been developed that aim to improve safety and capacity from Waihi to Tauranga. The overall key themes that emerged from the feedback were: intersection improvements, median barriers, passing lanes, cycleways, speed control and bridge widening. The next stage is to share this information with the community and gain further feedback on the favoured options. Tauranga Northern Link The Tauranga Northern Link project team are working on the final design of the new 6.8km road. Geotechnical investigations are underway to see what the ground (and underground) conditions are like along the route. This information will help the designers understand how stable the ground is and what improvements are required before construction can begin. Property purchases and the resource consents are also underway. All going to plan, construction of the Tauranga Northern Link will start next year. If you’d like see what the Tauranga Northern Link might look like there is an animation online www.nzta.govt.nz/tnl. It’s worth a look. Te Puna / Minden Road intersection upgrade Construction of the new two-lane roundabout is well underway and it will replace the Te Puna / Minden Road intersection, significantly improving safety. The first part of this project focussed on work off the state highway such as relocating services (ie power, phone and water), removing the old Te Puna Hall, forming the new local road behind the BP station, and starting the earthworks on the Bethlehem side of the intersection. The team are now focussing on building the new roundabout. There will be delays while the roundabout is constructed, however, the contractor aims to keep the disruption to your journey minimal. We appreciate your patience. This project is expected to be completed by July this year. Waihi to Tauranga Corridor
