LINES “Keep electric heaters on a level non-flammable surface.” – Mike Gallagher, safety manager WINTER 2014 Gas Plant Cleanup Benefits Wilmington Riverfront We recently completed a long-term project to remove the environmental risks from the site of our former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) in Wilmington. Highly visible from I-95 and situated in the heart of the Wilmington Riverfront area, cleanup of the MGP site has provided significant benefits to the community and the environment. We worked cooperatively with Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) to evaluate various remediation technologies and soil treatments. The final remedy involved a combination of excavation and off-site disposal and solidification of soils, an industry best practice widely accepted by the public and environmental regulators. The project also included the removal of a 30,000-gallon above ground storage tank and demolition of a former combustion turbine unit and a substation. Sustainable remediation solutions were key elements of the project – n Steel and copper recovered from the turbine were recycled Delmarva Power employees and contractors review site plans for cleanup of the Wilmington Manufactured Gas Plant. n Water recovered from the excavation pits was treated and reused n Low-emission fuels powered construction equipment This cleanup effort will have a sustainable and positive impact on the riverfront allowing our customers and their families to enjoy this space in the coming years.
