Enhance Your Child’s Self-Esteem & Curb Behavior Problems Play Therapy now being offered in the Play Therapy Room at the Clinic for Christian Counseling What is Play Therapy? When children have problems, sometimes they don’t have the words to talk about the root of them. Play is a child’s natural language which gives them a way to communicate feelings they don’t understand or can’t express any other way. Play therapy refers to the therapeutic benefits of play for children ages 3-12 years. Play therapy differs from regular play in that the therapist helps children to address and resolve their own problems. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. How Will Play Therapy Benefit My Child? Play therapy has been shown to be an effective intervention with children for a variety of behavioral and emotional difficulties. Examples of issues children may come to therapy for include anger management, grief and loss, divorce and family dissolution, and crisis and trauma, and for modification of behavioral disorders such as anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), academic and social developmental, physical and learning disabilities, and conduct disorders. Family is an essential part of the child’s healing process. The therapist will work with the family to reduce or eliminate behavior problems, enhance the relationship between the parent and child, and develop responsibility and self-control in their child. Play Therapy Helps Children: Become more responsible for behaviors and develop more successful strategies. Develop new and creative solutions to problems. Develop respect and acceptance of self and others. Learn to experience and express emotion. Cultivate empathy and respect for thoughts and feelings of others. Learn new social skills and relational skills with family.
