2016-17 Secondary School - County Competition

Welcome…
The Derbyshire Secondary Schools and Competition Plus County Competition Booklet 2016/17 will provide
the details that will help you plan and involve your school in a range of high quality and appropriate
sporting competitions throughout year. The first step will be to engage in the competition programme set
by your local School Games Organiser (SGO) and where applicable, your local programme will link to the
details listed on the following pages for each county final.
Some of your local and county competition programme is part of the Derbyshire School Games
Championship and the full competition programme is brought together under the umbrella of the
Derbyshire School Sport Association (DSSA). The programme is organised and supported by a number of
key partners including the School Games Organisers, the County Competition Officer, DSSA
Representatives, County Sport Association Representatives and Governing Bodies of Sport Development
Officers and coaches.
The School Games
The School Games is one of the flagship legacy programmes linked to the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games and sits at the core of the Governments investment in school sport. Financial support is
being received from the Department of Media, Culture and Sport, the Department of Health, the
Department for Education and Sport England Lottery Funding. This is helping to support the work of the 10
School Games Organisers in Derby and Derbyshire and the County Competition Officer to organise school
sport competitions.
Derbyshire School Sport Association
DSSA is one of the longest-standing schools’ sport associations in the country. Throughout its existence
over 70 years, DSSA has provided a driving force for competitive school sport in Derbyshire. DSSA is a
partnership made up of organisations that have an interest in ensuring the development of school sport in
Derbyshire. DSSA currently includes 14 sport sections and 9 area sections.
DSSA is always keen to welcome new committee members for the sports and area associations, so if you
would like to join, please contact: Karen Shopland, [email protected].
Competition Plus
The Competition Plus calendar of events is organised by the Derbyshire School Sport Plus Group and targets
young people with Special Educational Needs and/or a disability from mainstream and special schools. The
calendar offers a wide variety of festivals and competitions so as to be fully inclusive.
And finally…
The details in this booklet are correct at the time of going to print, so please check for the latest
competition details nearer the time of each competition. Some competitions will have entry deadline dates
early in the school year. However, most competitions will require entry confirmation about 2 weeks in
advance. If you are in doubt please contact the competition coordinator.
Have a great year of school sport and good luck in all the competitions you enter.
Details are correct at time of going to print. Please contact your SGO or county officer for the latest information.

County Championships
Students compete in area trials. 10 area teams compete in County Championships
Top runners are invited to the English Schools Cross Country Championships
Up to 12 per age group for each area
This championship operates as an inter-area competition, a county championship
and also serves as a trial for the county schools teams. However, it is not solely an
elite competition. Many students will compete in intra school events, local school
leagues and some in the ESAA Cup competitions. This event allows the student to
represent their area therefore promoting the development of students from keen
school runner to area representation. While races are often won by club athletes,
it introduces the school runner to a higher level competition and the large
numbers in the races (often about 70) promotes the participation of a wide range
of abilities. For many runners, the year 7 races are an excellent development from
the primary school events that have grown recently through the Partnership
events.

SSP Qualification
There is no regional pathway
Each team should include:
 A minimum of 5 boys, with a maximum of 8 boys and
 A minimum of 5 girls, with a maximum of 8 girls
Event Format
The Aviva Sportshall Secondary Programme offers an ideal format for competition
in which young people may develop their skills ahead of the track and field
season.
Team Information
School teams should consist of a minimum of 5 boys and 5 girls, with a maximum
of 8 boys and 8 girls being permitted. They may compete in a maximum
of three track and two field events, drawn from the following:
On the track
2 Lap Individual Race, 4 Lap Individual Race and 8 Lap Paarlauf, each requiring 2
athletes.
6 Lap Individual Race, requiring 1 athlete.
Obstacle Relay, 4 x 2 Lap Relay each requiring four athletes.
… and in the field
Shot, Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump, Vertical Jump
each requiring 2 athletes.
Additional Information
Team Managers are encouraged to find the running order and select their team
accordingly. It is inappropriate for an athlete to contest both the 2 and 4 lap
Individual Races or the 6 lap and 8 lap Paarlauf events since they follow
immediately. There are fewer problems associated in contesting field
events in the same group and additional time will be permitted for athletes
covering two events in the field. Please note that athletes will not be permitted to
compete in bare feet or unsuitable footwear. The Aviva Sportshall handbook
incorporates details of all the events, including a full explanation of each event
together with some teaching points. Visit www.sportshall.org for further details
along with event and competition rules downloads.

County Athletics Cup
Individual School entry. Forms sent out by January, closing date is February
The top placed teams can qualify for the Midlands finals.
12 girls per team, per age group & 14 boys per team per age group
This is an excellent school competition where all athletics events are covered by a
team of 12 (girls) or 14 (boys). Schools can enter teams in 4 age groups. Every
child does 2 events and the competitions take place at local athletic stadiums. The
top teams from each age group can then qualify to go through to the Midlands
finals in June 2016.
The events are organised by the schools, supported by the athletics association
and local athletics officials. It is an excellent introduction to the full track and field
programme of events for young athletes.
Additional Information
Further details can be found by visiting www.esaa.net and there is a
corresponding cross country competition with entry in June and first round in
October.

This championship is aimed at the keen all round athlete who wishes to

rules.

Students compete in area trials. 10 area teams compete in County Championships
Top athletes are invited to the English Schools Athletics Championships
Max of 2 per event. Students can do one event and/or a relay
This championship operates as an inter-area competition, a county championship
and also serves as a trial for the county schools teams. However, it is not solely an
elite competition. Many students do not have the opportunity to compete on a
proper athletics track with full track and field event facilities. There are no entry
standards and students will participate in their area trials to qualify. Schools
should see this as a natural progression from sportshall and quadkids athletics
events. It is also an excellent step up for students who participate in the ESAA
Cup. In the past schools have been reluctant to enter their students and just
focused on their elite and /or club athletes. Though the event winners do gain
selection for the county team, this is by no means the main focus of the event; it
is a championship open to all students who have qualified in their own area and
all keen athletes should be encouraged to trial for their area teams.

Derbyshire School Games County Final
SSP Qualification
There is a subsequent regional and national competition
4 players per team from a maximum squad of 5.
Team & Match Format
Teams will consist of 4 or 5 players with any 4 taking part in each match. The 5th
player can be used in any match and not just as a reserve in case of injury. If a
player is injured during a game then that game is conceded, but the 5th player
may be substituted for further games in that match. Each match will consist of 5
games: 2 x singles and 3 x doubles, with each player playing 2 games. This is shown
in the playing format for a match below:
1st Game:
Singles (No.1 ranked player in the team)
2nd Game:
Doubles (the 2 players not selected for a singles game)
3rd Game:
Singles (No. 2 or 3 ranked player chosen for singles)
4th Game:
Doubles (first singles player + either one of non-singles players)
5th Game:
Doubles (second singles player + the other non-singles player)
For each match a Score Sheet (provided) must be completed and signed by both
Team Managers. Team Managers are responsible for ensuring that the results on
the sheets are correct.
Each game will be 1 set to 21 points, using Rally Points scoring, with no extended
scoring or setting. The first (SSP) and second (County) rounds may be played to
fewer points (minimum of 11 points) if time is restricted.
If a team cannot play all of the games within a match, then those un-played games
will be awarded to the opposition game love.
Independent schools must compete in the geographically closest SSP grouping.

County Final
Open Invite
Qualification for all regional/national finals will be through the county cups.
3 players per team from a maximum squad of 4.
Format/ Rules
Utilising 1 basket on 1 half-court, matches will be 3v3 with squads of up to 4
players.
A 12-second shot-clock will be observed where possible.
Games will consist of one period of ten minutes (or the first team to score 21
points) with a rolling clock. This may change depending on the number of teams
that enter the competition. Players may be substituted at any time on a dead ball.
Scoring
Every shot inside the arc shall be awarded one 1 point.
Every shot behind the arc shall be awarded 2 points.
Every successful free throw shall be awarded 1 point.
Possession
A check ball exchange should take place behind the arc to restart possession. This
could be either from a defensive pass or dribble to the opposing player.
Fouls
A personal foul involves contact with an opponent, if in the act of shooting 1 or 2
free throws are permitted (depending on if the foul was committed in-front or
behind the arc), otherwise play restarts with a check ball outside the arc.
A team is in a penalty situation after it has committed 6 fouls.
Teams will receive 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
In the event of a draw there will be extra time until the first basket is scored.

Event Format
Futsal is a 5-aside game, normally played on a slightly larger pitch with hockey
sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce. It is played to touchlines
and all players are free to enter the penalty area and play the ball over head
height. As a small sided game players are constantly placed in situations where
they must receive or play whilst under pressure or in confined spaces. As a game
it places considerable demand on technique, movement, tactical awareness and

9 in a team from a maximum squad of 15
Event Format
A squad should consist of a maximum of 15 players. A team should consist of nine
players and up to six substitutes (A squad of 12 is recommended).
Teams can bat for one or two innings each, alternatively a limited number of balls
e.g. 20 good balls or until all batters are out.
One team bats while the other team fields and bowls.
The bowler bowls the ball underarm to the batter who hits the ball anywhere on
the rounders pitch. The batter then runs around the outside of as many posts as
possible before the fielders return the ball to touch the post the batter is heading
for.
If the batter hits the ball backwards then they must wait at first post until the ball
returns to the forward area.
If the batter reaches the second or third post in one hit, the batting team scores
half a rounder. If the batter reaches fourth post in one hit, the batting team
scores a rounder.
A batter can wait at first, second or third post when it is not safe to run.
A batter is out if the fielding team catch the ball hit by the batter before it
touches the ground or by touching the post the batter is heading to with the ball
before the batter reaches it.
