Advance at a Glance

Advance at a Glance:
Teacher Edition
May - June 2015
Teach. Reflect. Advance.
The mission of Advance, New York City’s development and evaluation system, is to engage teachers in reflecting on both student
learning data and meaningful feedback from school leaders, so they can learn, grow and thrive as professionals while helping students
learn to think for themselves. While some aspects of Advance may be changing in the 2015-16 school year, the basic principles which
guide the system will remain constant: providing teachers with multiple measures to assess their impact on student learning and with
valuable feedback to continuously reflect on and improve their instructional practice.
As you finish the 2014-15 school year, Advance at a Glance provides key dates and resources to support your collaboration with
colleagues and principals in planning Advance-related activities that drive your own professional learning.

Tips for Teachers
#1: End-of-Year Assessment
Administration
#2: Register for On-Going Professional
Development Opportunities This Summer
You should continue to administer all relevant end-of-year MOSL-eligible
assessments according to the timelines set out in this administration and
scoring calendar. If your school is planning to score assessments onsite, you are strongly encouraged to engage in norming practices with
your fellow teachers prior to actual scoring. To learn more about norming
guidelines and best practices for NYC Performance Tasks, along with
other assessments, please refer to these norming guidelines.
As part of your Summative End-of-Year Conference, you and your
principal will engage in a conversation regarding your instructional
practice and areas you hope to continue developing during the 201516 school year.
Once end-of-year assessments are completed and scored, you can begin
to review your students’ results to further assess the effectiveness of your
instruction for your classes, specific groups of students, and individual
students. You can also use this student data, alongside your Measures of
Teacher Practice (MOTP) feedback, to:
 Prepare for your Summative End-of-Year Conference by
reflecting on your instruction and its impact on student learning;
 Make any instructional adjustments for how you plan to teach
the standards and content in 2015-16; and
 Continue to strengthen your practice by leveraging school
supports and district resources.
Participating in professional development over the summer allows you
to continue this important reflection and provides a valuable
opportunity to do so with colleagues from across the city. Some
opportunities include:
 Participating in the June 6 Educator Conference. The We Are
ALL Teachers: A Day of Professional Learning For, By, and With
Educators conference on Saturday, June 6th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. at the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel. Morning sessions will offer
content-specific support and resources; the afternoon will include
peer-led workshops where educators take center stage to share,
interact and learn together. Check the DOE Teacher Professional
Development website in early May to register.
 Taking a course through After School Professional
Development Program (ASPDP). ASPDP offers NYC teachers
high-quality, low-cost alternatives to graduate-level courses that
may be applied toward salary differentials and New York State PD
requirements. All courses are aligned with the Common Core
Standards, the Danielson Framework for Teaching, and the
NYCDOE Citywide Instructional Expectations.
Advance Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
Why is it so important for me to complete the Roster Maintenance and Verification (RMV) Process?
A:
The RMV process gives teachers an opportunity to review and correct class roster information before Measures of Student
Learning (MOSL) ratings are calculated by the NYCDOE. Completing the RMV process ensures that you are linked to the
correct students in the Advance Web Application and that you will receive a MOSL subcomponent rating for Advance in the fall.
Q:
When can I expect to receive my final Measures of Teacher Practice (MOTP) subcomponent rating?
A:
Your MOTP subcomponent rating should be finalized by June 26 , at which point you will receive a print-out of the MOTP Final
Summary Form for you to sign for your file. The MOTP Final Summary Form will include your MOTP score and corresponding
MOTP subcomponent rating. As a reminder, MOTP scores and subcomponent ratings are not final until you receive and sign
this form. In the fall, when MOSL scores are available, your MOTP subcomponent rating will be combined with your MOSL
st
subcomponent rating to calculate your Advance Overall Rating. Your Advance Overall Rating will be released by September 1 .
Q:
How will the Citywide Advance Student Survey Pilot affect my Advance Overall Rating for the 2014-15 school year?
A:
In short – it won’t. While the results of the Advance Student Survey Pilot will provide teachers with valuable student feedback
regarding their instructional practice, the results will not be used when calculating teachers’ 2014-15 Advance Overall Ratings.
To learn more, please read this Letter to Teachers as well as this Introduction to the Advance Student Survey Pilot For Proctors.
