Pastoral Assistant
Main Job Purpose :
Supporting two Heads of House in their role with a specific focus on
vulnerable students and those on behaviour threshold levels 1 and 2. Work
effectively with the Head of House to support students’ pastoral needs.
Grade F
Main Duties:
Main Duties
1.
Responsible for the day to day discipline of students in two Houses, working with tutors,
teachers and subject leaders. Ensuring that relevant action is taken in line with school policies,
recorded and communicated appropriately.
2.
Ensure that referrals and conduct logs are recorded and monitored according to school policy.
3.
Ensuring effective liaison with the Head of House with regard to the schools’ exclusion
procedures.
4.
Organising preparation of reports on students as required for parent’s interviews, pastoral
support plans, Freshstarts, transfer information and exclusions, including the presenting of
information to the Governors Discipline Committee on exclusions as required.
5.
Ensuring that students on threshold levels 1 and 2 are encouraged, praised and rewarded
within the schools’ reward systems.
6.
With support from the Head of House, organise and construct Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs)
for students.
7.
Ensuring that students on the Vulnerable Students Register are supported when necessary.
8.
Managing communication with parents regarding pastoral and welfare issues.

Main Duties

Organise and manage Restorative Justice procedures.
10.
Attendance at multi agency meetings and liaison with external agencies as necessary for
students at levels 1 and 2.
11.
Supporting students on threshold levels 1 and 2 post Isolation Room.
12.
In discussion with the Heads of House, undertaking other duties and responsibilities
connected with the House.
Supervision and Management
The jobholder does not have regular supervisory responsibility for staff, but may be required to assist
in work familiarisation for new recruits.
Creativity and Innovation (i.e. Problem Solving)
The work is largely regulated by laid down procedures but the jobholder solves problems
encountered in matters such as developing individual support programmes for students; designing
formats for improved communication within the school on pastoral matters.

Decision Making
The work is carried out within clearly defined rules and procedures involving decisions such as:
discretion in giving sanctions for minor infringements; discretion on contacting parents; discretion on
making minor modifications to programmes of support. The jobholder makes recommendations e.g.
re type of support programme to Head of House, tutor and parent; to individual students on personal
and social interaction and emotional management.
Resources
The jobholder is required to use resources with care but is not personally accountable for the security
of physical or financial resources.
Working Environment
There are frequent interruptions by students, but this is the nature of the post. The job involves
resolving some conflicting priorities, particularly as they relate to crisis situations.
The jobholder comes into contact with students and parents who can be difficult to work with.
Knowledge and Skills
The jobholder requires a good standard of practical knowledge and skills in supporting young people,
building relationships with parents and a range of professionals, learning support techniques and
data base and administrative skills.
