ANT 4497: Hiphop Survey Design Hargrove Fall 2010 Due Monday

ANT 4497: Hiphop Survey Design Hargrove Fall 2010 Due Monday, November 22nd at 5:00pm
Hiphop (also referred to as hip-hop, rap, and gangsta’ rap) is increasingly being recognized within higher
education as a complex culture exhibiting important intellectual, artistic, and political insight on the part of
practitioners, fans, and scholars. Some even suggest that the study of hiphop reveals deep historical
knowledge about the plight of race-based inequality at both the local and global scale—which can only be
accurately situated within the scholarly arena if we push beyond the common misconceptions held by the
mainstream. This assignment is designed to create a survey tool for assessing UNF student perceptions
of hiphop (as a cultural system- not merely as a musical genre).
In order to design an accurate survey instrument, you will need to do the following:
Read the chapter “Structured Ethnographic Data Collection: Ethnographic Surveys” available in the
assignments folder (also in Course Documents folder), to gain insight into “HOW” to construct
ethnographic surveys
Visit the Hiphop Archive at Harvard University and spend 1-2 hours perusing the site (taking notes on
important elements to consider) to understand how hiphop is being defined and contextualized for
this study (which will also generate the a priori knowledge necessary for asking the right
questions- see page 167 of the reading for clarification) http://www.hiphoparchive.org/
Generate the “ domains” you believe to be important for such a survey
Once you have completed these initial steps, you are ready to design your survey questions. For this
assignment, we will focus on “Multiple-Choice” format; thus you will need to write 10-15 questions with at
least four possible answers for each (you can include up to six possible answers if necessary). You may
choose to focus on any aspect of hiphop (knowledge of the complexity of hiphop, exposure to hiphop
music, how the survey taker would define hiphop, what artists they believe exemplify hiphop culture, etc.),
but use the article to guide the development of the survey questions.
Finally, you will submit the survey questions to me as a word document [.doc] (via online submission
through the assignments folder- due by Monday November 22nd at 5pm) AND you will deploy your survey
to 20 people outside this class- and preferably outside UNF (via email or any means you have at your
disposal).
From the collective submissions, I will then formulate a survey that will be administered to UNF students
through the Office of Institutional Research; which I will analyze for our upcoming hiphop show- REAL
Hiphop: Reppin’ the First Coast scheduled for Tuesday, December 2nd at 8pm.
For the ANALYSIS portion of this assignment (10 points, due November 30th by 5pm- submitted online
via Assignments folder) you will analyze the results of your 20 surveys in the format of your choice
(formatted as a word document; however, the write-up can be either qualitative or quantitative--or a mix of
both).
(Free online survey tools- optional)
