OVERVIEW OF STUDENT EVALUATIONS INQUIRY IN THE COGNITIVE SCIENCES Washington University in St. Louis Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology Program Instructor Spring 2015 Overall rating for the instructor Overall rating for the course 6.75/7 (96%) 6.54/7(93%) Selected Additional Comments “Julia Haas is one of the best, if not the best instructors I have had at WashU. She is highly relatable and makes the class material incredibly interesting, but she also manages to motive [motivate] the students to go beyond what is required. I have learned more from this course than I have learned in higher level courses.” “From the first day of the course, it was obvious that Dr. Haas wanted to create a classroom environment where everyone felt comfortable participating and working as a team. She made everyone feel like they were an integral part of the class. She knew everyone’s name by the first week of class and encouraged her students to get to know each other, as well. She broke down complex concepts into smaller parts so that they could be understood, and she made sure everyone was on the same page before moving on with her lectures. She not only taught me about cognitive science, but also about study habits and writing strategies that I will use throughout the rest of my education. She was always available for consultation outside of class, and always incredibly willing to help. It is obvious that she truly cares about the success of her students, and that she will do anything to help them success. Best professor I’ve had at WashU, hands down.” INQUIRY IN THE COGNITIVE SCIENCES Washington University in St. Louis Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology Program Instructor Fall 2014 Overall rating for the instructor Overall rating for the course 6.10/7 (87%) 5.86/7(84%) “Professor Haas challenged us to thoroughly understand sometimes difficult material, but this was very effective as a teaching method and she maintained a very positive and interested attitude as well as concern for the students.” “I really appreciated Dr. Haas's concern for the students' success and understanding. She came across as being accessible and straightforward, and altered lecture formats or explanations for enhanced clarity when necessary. If approached during office hours, she explains concepts and clears up confusion effectively according to individual needs.” ADVANCED TOPICS IN PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOLOGY: MORAL PSYCHOLOGY Emory University Philosophy Department, Psychology Department Instructor, Spring 2014 Evaluation of the instructor Evaluation of the course Waiting Waiting Selected additional comments: “This course and instructor strongly encouraged discussion + full class participation (Yes, I’m talking about the cold calling)” “One of the most enthusiastic and organized Profs I’ve had. The content of this course was incredibly complex, and you managed to put it all in an understandable light” BASIC PROBLEMS IN PHILOSOPHY: MORAL PSYCHOLOGY Emory University Philosophy Department Instructor, Spring 2013 Evaluation of the instructor (94%) Evaluation of the course (89%) 8.5/9 8.02/9 Selected additional comments: “I feel that I’m very aware of current arguments and even managed to gain footing in more classic arguments of philosophy through a modern lens. I appreciate that a lot. I feel like I can answer more questions about philosophy and am not totally unaware of how to structure an argument.” “I was very impressed with the feedback I got on my paper. Even in my freshman writing class, I did not get this kind of feedback. I know it must’ve taken a long time to grade all those rough drafts and since mine was among the last that you graded (since mine was somewhat late), I am very touched that you still paid so much attention to make my paper better.” INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS Emory University Philosophy Department Instructor, Fall 2012 Evaluation of the instructor (88%) Evaluation of the course (83%) 7.95/9 7.44/9 Selected additional comments: (N/A: lost by Emory Philosophy Department) INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC Emory University Philosophy Department Instructor, Spring 2011 Evaluation of the instructor (98%) Evaluation of the course (96%) 8.79/9 8.65/9 Selected additional comments: “In my entire school career of twelve years, I have not come across a teacher who understood her students so well, taught the course so well, and was so committed to teaching.” “The enthusiasm was great, especially the help outside of class, and the answering of questions in class” “You paid attention to everyone’s needs and were extremely helpful. Class discussion often had funny, engaging examples. Only suggestion – maybe make the hypothetical problem set slightly easier!”
