Renewable energy - Drexel GK-12

Renewable energy
Where does electricity come from?
• First of all, what is electricity?
Where does electricity come from?
• First of all, what is electricity?
“a form of energy resulting from the existence of
charged particles (such as electrons or protons),
either statically as an accumulation of charge or
dynamically as a current.” -Oxford Pocket Dictionary
electricity is the energy that comes from moving or
accumulating electrons
• What are sources of electricity?
Where does electricity come from?
What is “green” and renewable
energy?
• Renewable energy
–Energy that comes from a source that will not run
out over time…What are some examples?
• Green energy
– Energy that doesn’t contaminate the environment
(i.e. greenhouse gasses, CO2, N2O )
Why do we want to use green and
renewable energy?
Why do we want to use green and
renewable energy?
• Eventually we will run out of fossil fuels like
coal and oil (need renewable sources )
• Fossil fuels release greenhouse gasses when
we use them to make energy, these
contribute to global warming (need green
energy sources)
Solar energy
• How does it work?
First, what is light?
Solar cells absorb light from the sun
Absorption data from solar cells made from Cadmium
Selenide in Mr. Edley’s lab.
How does a solar cell use light?
Todays challenge
• We will play “Renew-a-Bean”
• Get into groups of 4.
– Begin reading instructions to Renew-A-Bean
Round 2
• Let’s think of a way we could make the energy
supply last longer
Round 2
• Conservation of energy (use less per decade)
• Use more renewable energy
• Play Renew-a-bean again with your group’s
idea to make the energy last longer
