The University and Whist Club would like to wish all of its members a
Happy New Year! We kicked 2014 off with a Black Tie Chef’s Table Gala;
hosting 32 diners for an evening of 12 exquisitely prepared courses, each
paired with a rare or limited quantity wine. Executive Chef, Robert Lhulier,
and his staff worked tirelessly to bring a one of kind experience to all those in
attendance.
If you missed out on the New Year’s Eve event, do not worry! The Chef’s
Table series runs once a month at the UWC, and we are already taking
reservations for the rest of 2014! The regularly scheduled events offer eight
courses with wine and cost $150 per person, inclusive of gratuity.

The evening will feature a multi course meal designed around the featured

Authors Speak, Book Club Series Returns February 5
Following three great dinner events, the Authors Speak Book Club series took a holiday hiatus. The group is
excited to get started again on Wednesday, February 5th at 6pm, as they hear from author Michael Stafford on
his book An Upward Calling.
For those unfamiliar with the series, the Book Club has been hosting local authors once a month to discuss
their work and get to know the author themselves. The night begins with a presentation by the author, which is
then followed by a group dinner and further discussion with the author.
If you are a book lover and have yet to attend one of these events,
you will not want to miss another! February’s book, An Upward Calling:
Politics for the Common Good, is a call-to-action for a new politics based
on solidarity, civic virtue, and the common good. Stafford offers a fresh
take on issues like immigration reform, environmental stewardship,
income inequality and our public disclosure. Praise for Stafford’s book
include:
“Michael’s is a voice that needs to be heard in American politics, a
voice that respectfully and soundly calls for common sense, decency, and real
plans of action for our society. This is a must read for anyone who is interested
in becoming a more engaged member of society.” - Ken Grant, former
Communications Director of the Delaware Republican Party
Reservations are now being taken for the February Book Club event. You
may register by going online or by calling the Club at (302) 658-5125. The book
may be purchased online through Amazon, through your e-readers, or by
placing an order with the Club.

Building Community; Clubs Within a Club
The Membership Committee has been working hard to provide more options to its members. The
latest program to launch is the Clubs within A Club; wherein members are welcome to create and/or
join a variety of interest groups to meet both inside and outside of the Club.
The University and Whist Club has a number of small groups and Clubs that are already
successfully meeting and welcoming new members:

available in the Club offices. If you are
interested in joining the distribution list, please

A Letter from the President
To My Fellow Members,
Welcome to the frigid cold of winter. Our Club fireplaces are working really
well so come on out and enjoy the warmth that they provide, along with the
warmth that every member receives when they enter the building. With the
new year upon us, we will be working even harder to make the Club your favorite place to go, for fine food, fine wine and spirits and good company. You
will be hearing a lot from us over the next 12 months and we hope that you will
take the time to participate in all that will be going on. Try a new club within a
club, meet new people, try new drinks. Enjoy the Club for business or pleasure,
either or both is fine with us. This is your club and we want to give you the experience that you are seeking every day. Just let us know and we will do whatDouglas Hershman
ever we can to surpass your expectations. As a precursor to our annual meeting,
you will learn that our primary goal for this year is to drive new membership at the Club. I have challenged
each Board member to bring in 2 new members this year. I would ask you each to seek out a new member
from among your group of friends, colleagues and/or acquaintances. Let them know the great things that
are taking place at the Club and urge them to become a part of the growth and prosperity of our Club.
There is no better time to join and get involved. Thanks as always.
Doug
