Term Two, Number Eight Tēnā Koutou Whānau, Thursday 25th May, 2016 Board of Trustees Election Vote I am thrilled to announce that we had seven people nominated to be on the Upper Hutt School Board of Trustees. Information about the seven nominees and your voting papers were mailed to you yesterday. Please take time to read this information and vote. All votes need to be returned to the School by noon on 3 June 2016. If you do not receive your voting papers, please contact the School Office. SMILE - you’re on camera! Last week you will have received information about our school photos this Monday, 30th May. Please contact the School Office if you would like a Family Group envelope. Family/sibling photograph orders must be received prior to photo day to ensure the photograph is taken. On photo day, students will be issued with an internet access key to enable all parents/whanau access to online viewing of the photographs and to allow ordering after photo day for those that have not preordered. Whanau Evening Fun We warmly welcome your family to our Term Two Whanau Evening. This fun family evening is next week, on Wednesday 1st June from 6:20 - 7:20pm in the School Hall. The evening will start with our Kapa Haka performing the Upper Hutt School Haka - Kia eke Te Maunga (Climb the Mountain). This Haka was written and created by students and staff in Term Four last year. It was performed for the very first time for our departing Year 6 students at the end of last year. On Wednesday 1st June - we are going to perform it just for you! One of our cultural goals in 2016 is to get new Kapa Haka uniforms for our children. During the performance of the Haka, there will be a ‘koha tin’ for anyone that would like to make a donation towards the new Kapa Haka uniforms. After the Haka, we will be focusing on learning, in particular Maths and how you can help your child to enjoy and succeed in maths. There will be four fun maths learning stations for you and your children to take part in. If you go to all four stations - you will be in the draw to win a Family Maths prize! While you’re here, you will also be able to give feedback about Sports P.R.I.D.E at Upper Hutt School. We hope to see you on Wednesday, 1st June at 6:20pm in the Hall! Health and Safety Focus - Absences from School If your child is going to be absent from school, it is very important that you let the School Office know by 9am. All teachers mark their roll at 9am every morning. If your child is not here at the start of the school day and we haven’t heard from you - then we immediately start ringing to check your child is safe. On Tuesday, the Office had to ring twenty families to find out if their child was meant to be away from school - this took nearly two hours by the time we could get in touch with every family. If your child is going to be away, please ring or email the office. We just want to know your child is safe and where they are supposed to be :) Extended Absences from School - if you plan on your child being away from school for more than three days, could you please inform the school in writing (email, note or letter). We understand there are times when you may be away on holiday, visiting family, at an event etc. The Ministry of Education requires the school to keep written records of any extended absences from school for our yearly Attendance Audit. Inter-School Cross Country Success On Sunday 15th May, Upper Hutt School entered its largest team of runners into the Inter-School Cross Country Race. We had children from Year 2-6 compete and every single one of them did us proud! The Team showed true P.R.I.D.E through their determination and excellence on the day. Special congratulations to Bailey Nightingale and Olivia Yule who came second and third in their race winning the Year 5 Girls’ Cup. WE were the only school other than Silverstream to win a cup :) Thanks to all the wonderful families who came to support their awesome children. Thanks to Mr Ewington for organising the Team and making it happen and also to Melissa and Sierra Tai for their support on the day. Scooter Safety The number of scooter accidents since the introduction of our Scooter Helmet introduction has decreased significantly. Thank you for looking after your child's’ head/brain by sending along a helmet for them to wear whilst they are scootering. Andrew, from The Cycle Centre, has offered a discount of 20% off all helmets if purchased before the 31 August, 2016. Thanks to The Cycle Centre for their ongoing support of our Upper Hutt School Community. F & PC News Huge thanks for all the wonderful support with our Bake Sale on Wednesday. Your yummy and generous baking was wonderful and we raised just over $1,000 to go towards our fundraising focus of Sports Gear for the school. THANK YOU! We know our school kids love sausages so we are having a Lunchtime Sausage Sizzle on Friday 3rd June. If you would like to order your child a sausage, please have money and form back at school no later than Wednesday 1st of June at 9am. An order form for each child will be sent home today. Save the date! Shine up your dancing shoes! The School Disco is booked for Friday 24th June! The students have chosen the theme of “I wish I was.” It’s a little too early to have tickets on sale, however it is time to let the DJ know their favourite song. There will be a drop box at the Office should your child want to write it down or how about emailing it to us? [email protected]. Please include song, artist and your child’s year group. Last day for song requests is 31st May. Our next Committee Meeting is on Thursday 9th June, 7pm in the Staffroom. We would love to see you there!
