Volunteer Role Description Program: Community Partnerships Title: Outdoor Classroom Program Activity Leader Responsible to: Coordinator, Community Partnerships Responsible for: Children ages 5 -12 years old CNIB Mission: To promote vision health and enhance independence for people with vision loss. Main Goal: To give sighted children hands-on interactive opportunities to gain insight and awareness about vision loss. Children will learn and experience adaptations blind and partially sighted people make to function every day and to learn about eye safety and protection. General Summary: The volunteer in this program will help to facilitate and support the established programs for the outdoor classroom. Roles, Responsibilities and Tasks: • Arrive 15 minutes before scheduled classroom booking to help set up and prepare for group arrival. • Aid in delivering components of the educational programs by ‣ preparing and thoroughly familiarizing yourself with volunteer manual ‣ preparing and thoroughly familiarizing yourself each station assigned to you ‣ directing/ facilitating/engaging program participants in the program activities ‣ guiding and supporting other volunteer chaperones/teachers who may come to the program with the program participants • Help collect feedback for evaluation at the completion. • Help prepare and distribute promotional materials and program information to community partners . • Participate in events and activities that develop leadership skills and knowledge. • Ensure all equipment returned to storage upon conclusion to the program. • Ensure equipment is functional, clean and safe for use before, during and after the program. • Ensure the safety of all program participants. • Respect the dignity and privacy of the program participants. • Follow CNIB policies and procedures Gifts, Skills, Experience and Qualities: • Compassion for children with special needs and some experience working with them • Patience and sensitivity • Friendly, empathetic, creative, enthusiastic • Punctual and reliable behavior Screening Procedures: In accordance with CNIB policies and Volunteer Alberta, positions involved with children, youth and vulnerable adults includes a volunteer application form, an interview, reference checks and a police information check. Orientation and Training: • General orientation to CNIB Calgary • Orientation to and training in the outdoor classroom programs • Orientation to safety and emergency procedures Support, Supervision and Evaluation: All volunteers at CNIB are valued as an important partner in the organization. CNIB will provide regular check-ins, self-evaluation opportunities, and recognition events. As well, all volunteers will have the protection of general liability insurance coverage when working as a CNIB volunteer. Schedule and Commitment: Depending on the demand of the program, up to 2, 4 hour shifts per week from May-October.
